TRADITIONAL BRITISH CUISINE
Britain is famous all over the world for its gardens, dogs, villages, buses, private schools, the Queen, sports like football and cricket and, of course, its wonderful food. British dishes are very tasty because of the quality of the ingredients and don’t need complicated recipes.
Britain has given birth to many dishes which are very popular today in different countries, such as a sandwich, fish and chips, puddings.
A lot of people in Great Britain eat sandwiches for their lunch.
There are special sandwich shops in the country. You can buy all sorts of sandwiches in these shops. You can get meat sandwiches or salad sandwiches, cheese, egg, fish and even fruit sandwiches.
If you ask foreigners to name typically English food, they will surely say «Fish and chips» . This dish consists of fried chops from fish (usually cod, haddock and plaice) and French fries. You can find fish and chips shops in most British towns. The traditional fish and chips are eaten with salt and vinegar.
Puddings are probably the most popular dishes of Great Britain. There are hundreds of variations of them in England. Many of the puddings are served with fresh fruit, custard or cream. English puddings are easy to cook and delicious. They can make any dinner a festive one.
Everyone knows that the English are a nation of tealovers. Tea was brought to England in the 17 th century and has been popular in the country ever since. The British like their tea strong and fresh-made, with a lot of milk.
There are many traditional tea-rooms in Britain where people can have teas according to their taste and to how they are feeling.
English Breakfast is strong tea which fills you with energy. Prince of Wales and Earl Grey are more relaxing. Green teas are very light and good after meals.
The British are famous for their love of sweet things like biscuits and buns, jams, marmalade, scones and several kinds of cakes. For British people any time is eat-a-sweet time: teabreak at work, watching TV at home, on a car journey, in the cinema, at school.
If you know anything about Scottish food, you’ve probably heard of Haggis, the most popular delicacy of Scotland. Haggis is made from sheep’s offal with different spices, baked in a sheep’s stomach. It’s usually served with mashed potatoes.
In Wales fish and other seafood are extremely popular. The Welsh are also fond of oats, milk, butter and cheese. If you manage to visit Wales, you should try wonderful cottage cheese. There about 60 kinds of it in Britain. The most popular is Cheddar.
It is said, that the Royal family have a passion for eggs. They like them scrambled, fried, boiled and poached, and they also enjoy them baked with cream and served with minced chickens.
Some famous British dishes have strange or surprising names. Welsh rabbit, for example, contains no rabbit at all. It is made with bread, beer, mustard and cheese. Spotted dog is a pudding dotted with raisins, Jam roly poly is a roll of pastry with jam sauce. Bubble and squeak is made with fried onions, cabbage and potatoes.
