Towards Zero Carbon Homes with Masonry ZEROCO 2016 CO
Towards Zero Carbon Homes with Masonry Martin Clarke Chairman MMA CEO British Precast ZEROCO 2016 CO
What is the MMA ? § A two year old consortium of all sectors with an interest in the masonry improvement agenda § Quality, productivity, value, innovation § Represent £ 2+ billion sector § Products used in 85% of new homes § www. modernmasonry. co. uk ZEROCO 2016 CO
What is the MMA ? 2007 yearbook available today for all delegates ZEROCO 2016 CO
What is the MMA ? § We welcome the CSH as a long overdue move towards performance specifications and away from the unfair and unscientific MMC approach § Our response last year advocated a more rounded approach to sustainability – still a long way off ZEROCO 2016 CO
A big step forward ZEROCO 2016 CO
Masonry and the Zero Carbon agenda § Masonry is alive and kicking, innovative and ambitious § We have no more of a problem reaching CSH levels as timber-frame and all other materials and methods § Growing interest in what else you get in a masonry home, such as………. ZEROCO 2016 CO
Brick and block housing § Durable – measured in centuries § Quiet § Fireproof § Healthy homes § Local materials § Secure § § § Economic Robust Popular Insect proof but 1 week longer building cycle [NAO] ZEROCO 2016 CO
Brick and block housing § and flood resistant ZEROCO 2016 CO
ZEROCO 2016 CO
Masonry and the Zero Carbon agenda § We support the objectives § We will produce a signed Concordat to mirror the Government and HBF initiative § We have set up a Futures Group with the HBF – very supportive people involved ZEROCO 2016 CO
Masonry and the Zero Carbon agenda Looking at all variables and options ZEROCO 2016 CO
Masonry and the Zero Carbon agenda § Aiming to get as much out of the building fabric as possible § To do this we are focused on insulation, air-tightness, thermal bridging § We know how much the industry wishes to avoid both cost and extra wall thickness – but clearly some compromise will be necessary ZEROCO 2016 CO
Masonry and the Zero Carbon agenda § Futures Group guidance is urgently required by the housebuilders § MMA and HBF hope to publish guidance within 2 or 3 months focusing on Code levels 3 and 4 § Awaiting Carbon Challenge technical spec for Bristol and Peterborough from EP – should feature thermal mass ZEROCO 2016 CO
Masonry and the Zero Carbon agenda § Levels 5 and 6 will follow – limited demand as yet – too expensive with unproven technology ZEROCO 2016 CO
Masonry and the Zero Carbon agenda § Complex documents; complex calculations – all set in a shifting scene § We are concerned at how the smaller builder and self-builder will cope § As with timber-frame and steel-frame and other constructions, advice will not be “one size fits all” § One certain change will come with 2008 SAP review ZEROCO 2016 CO
Masonry and the Zero Carbon Agenda also Customs & Excise consultation comments by 31 July ZEROCO 2016 CO

What does Hanson Ecohouse demonstrate? § All the benefits of brick and block plus fast method of building, factory produced, quality assured, durable, secure with thermal mass at a price consistent with current practice. § The system inherently addresses the more exacting needs of the new CSH - airtightness, insulation, sustainability, durability, sound & fire insulation required for future high performance dwellings. § The latest in ‘Smart’ building solutions technology with remote operation of heating, lighting, energy monitoring security and interactive web-based hub link to community services for healthcare, education, ZEROCO 2016 welfare & leisure.
Is it fast to build ? § The glued masonry walling system is faster to completion than comparative panelised timber systems since they normally require the external façade to be constructed after the basic structure is erected whereas Hanson’s system comes complete with external full brick finish. § Pre installed wiring loops and outlets can be incorporated into the walls prior to erection § Exposed elements are not susceptible to damage from inclement weather conditions during construction (or fire for that matter!) § Disregarding choice of roofing system for Ecohouse the time for construction of roof will be similar. Precast options Physical properties essentially the same as masonry but can also provide paintable finish thus maximising admittance ZEROCO 2016 CO
HAMMARBY SJÖSTAD ZEROCO 2016 CO
www. hammarbysjostad. se The core of the environmental and infrastructural planning of Hammarby Sjöstad jointly developed by Stockholm Water Company, Fortum and the City of Stockholm Waste Management Administration can be summarised in an eco-cycle model known as the Hammarby Model. This model shows the interaction between sewage and refuse processing and energy provision, as well as the added benefits to society of modern sewage, energy and waste processing systems. The overall goal “twice as good as the norm” required new ideas for energy, water, waste, transport, building design, construction site logistics all those systems that we normally take for granted in a modern city. ZEROCO 2016 CO
Is a largely precast build but masonry can learn from it Further visit being organised ZEROCO 2016 CO
Watch this space § New insulation combinations – Vacuum Insulated Masonry; foil systems; even phase change materials as used by lightweight house suppliers § More Masonry packages – cf Ra § More use of recycled materials § Responsible sourcing credit scheme to improve on FSC scheme for timber ZEROCO 2016 CO
