Tom Le. Febvre Global Systems Division Earth System Research Lab 1 April 2002 MDL Collaboration Workshop – 29 Sept. 2010 Integrated Hazards Information Services
What is IHIS? • Originally named Next Generation Warning Tool (NGWT) • Mission: Integrate three hazard product generation systems used by NWS – WARNGEN – Graphical Hazards Generator (GHG) – River Pro (Hydrological hazards) 2 April 2002 MDL Collaboration Workshop – 29 Sept. 2010 Integrated Hazards Information Services
Integrate Three Tools WARNGEN (< 1 hour) GHG (Hours-Days) IHIS River. Pro (Days) 3 April 2002 MDL Collaboration Workshop – 29 Sept. 2010 Integrated Hazards Information Services
IHIS Workshop • GSD hosted IHIS Workshop in late October 2009 • Diverse set of Participants: – NWS – Managers, Forecasters – Software Developers – Partners including: Emergency Managers Private Meteorologists (Accuweather, TV) Urban Drainage and Flood Control Social Scientists 4 April 2002 MDL Collaboration Workshop – 29 Sept. 2010 Integrated Hazards Information Services
Workshop Results • • Generated many requirements Developed a “strawman” user interface Two-way collaboration – Impact awareness Transition current product-based to a decisionsupport paradigm Solution: AWIPS II and web-browser interfaces to view and edit hazard information 5 April 2002 MDL Collaboration Workshop – 29 Sept. 2010 Integrated Hazards Information Services
Strategy - Web Application • Build prototype web application first • Make web app available to all team members via internet • Gather feedback -> Refine requirements • Use requirements/feedback gathered for CAVE application development 6 April 2002 MDL Collaboration Workshop – 29 Sept. 2010 Integrated Hazards Information Services
First cut at Tornado Warning Prototype Pathway – what it is • A starting point based on workshop results • An avenue to get rapid feedback from forecasters on GUI features to be built in AWIPS II Cave • Proof of concept platform for exploring: – Integrating Warn. Gen, GHG, River. Pro into a common interface – Web technology as a way to build prototypes for rapid development – Providing two-way communication with partners via a common interface 7 MDL Collaboration Workshop – 29 Sept. 2010 Integrated Hazards Information Services
First cut at Tornado Prototype Pathway – what it isn’t • Not an end product • Not an operational system -- functionality is limited e. g. • Hazard Database is read-only canned data • Short-fused (Warn. Gen) tracking is still being developed • Tornado Warning Text Formatter ~70% complete (still needs tracking information) • Limited GIS layers 8 April 2002 AWIPS II Extended – Data Delivery Paradigm – April 14, 2010
IHIS Web Application 9 April 2002 MDL Collaboration Workshop – 29 Sept. 2010 Integrated Hazards Information Services
Next Steps • Rapid Prototype Process – Feedback from listserver – Recorded on Feature. Requests Wiki page – Prioritized by IWT – Tasked for releases – 6 -8 week cycles • Evolve to long-fused and hydro • Possible Workshop • Two-way collaboration – Social Science study – Partner prototype pathway 10 MDL Collaboration Workshop – 29 Sept. 2010 Integrated Hazards Information Services
IHIS and Iris IRIS IHIS --Integrating Warn. Gen GHG River. Pro On AWIPSII --NWS Hazards Database Web Portal For Hazard Information Creating Database of Partner Information: Spotter reports Twitter, NWSChat. . . Data Sharing Overlap: IHIS: web 2 py/JS Ext Iris: Java/JS qooxdoo Workshop requirement: Common look and feel for partners/forecasters Collaboration: If not code, data sharing and web portal design. 11 MDL Collaboration Workshop – 29 Sept. 2010 Integrated Hazards Information Services
NWSWarn 12 MDL Collaboration Workshop – 29 Sept. 2010 Integrated Hazards Information Services
Collaborations • • 13 Development organizations: Iris, NSSL, MDL, NCEP NWS Hydrologists and Forecasters AWIPS II NCLADT Raytheon Developers Univ. of Wisconsin SAGE Project COMET-funded Univ. South Florida team NWSWarn? SSWIM Social Scientists – funding an ethnography study of Partners (EM's, broadcasters. . . ) MDL Collaboration Workshop – 29 Sept. 2010 Integrated Hazards Information Services
Summary • Demonstrated that web technology is a viable option for initial rapid prototype development and providing two-way communication between forecasters and partners • Developing plans to begin Client interface in Cave with re-used Server code (eventually as a plug-in) • Collaboration is critical for IHIS success 14 MDL Collaboration Workshop – 29 Sept. 2010 Integrated Hazards Information Services
