Title
Linking through Voice Over IP
VOIP Advantages • Low Cost • Flexible • Fast to bring up
VOIP Disadvantages • Reliability • Delay • Missing packets
Works Like A Telephone System • Dial a number to connect to a node • Look up the number in a directory • Can’t connect if node is busy
Comparison of Systems
Web Sites • • IRLP: www. irlp. net Echolink: www. echolink. org WIRES: www. vxstd. com/en/wiresinfo-en/ e. QSO: www. eqso. org
Easy Ways to Get on IRLP • • WA 7 GIE (three repeaters) UARC 146. 76 IHC 448. 55 SDARC 146. 08
WA 7 GIE (node 5620) • • • 449. 425 Nelson Peak 449. 475 Lake Mountain 449. 55 Lewis Peak 100 Hz tone Always connected to Western Reflector (node 9250)
146. 76 Lake Mtn (Node 3352) • • Requires UARC membership ID, prefix, node number in one transmission Have QSO ID, prefix, “ 73” to hang up
448. 55 IHC Lakepark • • • No membership required PL = 123. 0 Send “ 3078”; Wait for response Send node number; Wait for response ID; Have QSO Send “ 73”; ID; Drop Carrier
SDARC 147. 08 • Membership in SDARC required • Both IRLP and Echolink • See www. ecso. com/sdarc. html for details
Getting a Contact • • Check time zones Mention you’re from Utah Wait several minutes Use a reflector
Western Reflector Channels • • 0: Calling and QSOs 1: Linking and QSOs 2: Special feeds – listen only 3: Open QSO and linking; CA emergency 4: Hawaii/Pacific Rim linking 5: Special activities (e. g. balloon); QSOs 6: Calling and QSOs
Western Reflector Channels • 7: Calling and nets: various emergency groups • 8: Linked to Echolink node 152566, NV-GATE, ARRL, Skywarn • 9: Reserved for ERC-ECS nets; no QSOs.
Creating Your Own IRLP Node
Computer Requirements • • P 133 or better 96 Meg RAM Approved sound card Parallel port Network card (duh!) Internet connection 40, 000 Bits/sec or more IRLP Card (w/Linux)
Steps to Establish Node • • • Buy the IRLP interface card Get Linux installed and running Let IRLP people know how to access it Wait for IRLP people to upload IRLP Interface audio and test
Repeater or Simplex Node? • Repeater must be coordinated • Simplex node must have control operator
“Gotchas” • No IDs may be sent down Internet • No touchtones may be sent down Internet • No courtesy tones may be sent down Internet • PTT sent to Internet may not include hang time.
Legal Issues • Simplex nodes must have control operators • Observe third-party traffic rules • See http: //www. arrl. org/qst/2003/02/Vo. IP. pdf
