At the age of 9, Thomas began studying Latin, Greek and French. At age of 16, he entered the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg and the professor G. Wythe became his influential mentor. He was a diligent student and displayed an avid curiosity in all fields and graduated from college in 1762.
