Michael’s work in America was not successful and he was forced to return home, Julia had strange feelings: she didn’t like his character, but at the same time she was pleasant to see him again. Soon after Michael’s return, he offered Julia to marry him, and that event made Julia more than happy. Michael also decided to move to London. Julia wasn’t satisfied with her life with Michael, because of his peaceful and calm character. After some period of time their calm life was disturbed by war. Michael went to war as an officer. His life in army wasn’t really hard, but during the war Michael aged. Julia noticed that, when her husband returned home, еverything that had attracted Julia to Michael, at that time annoyed her.

Time passed, and their theater gave them a lot of money, but Michael’s character was becoming worse and worse, and Julia couldn’t understand, why some years before that she had been full of passion to this man. She fall in love with a young man, who was the same age as her son Roger. Tom Fenell loves her, as the great actress on the stage, and Julia has already lost a line between reality and her plays. One day she feels that she don’t love him anymore and she plays a unforgettable role on the stage. After that, she eats a simple beefsteak, she is happy to know that she is free.
The main character Julia Lambert is the main character of Maugham’s novel “Theatre”. § She is an independent woman, with a sense of humor, the ability to judge people. § She is a rather risk taker, always rejecting the secure, ordinary world for more exciting, mystical unknown. § She is a determined woman, striving to be totally free from the everyday aspects of the world. § She is a beautiful woman, more or less a careful mother, a rather good wife and a brilliant actress. 1. “Being Julia” • Being a really great actress of her time, it doesn’t present any difficulty for her to think over every detail, every scene of her life, not only on the stage: the way she is dressed, the way she’ll turn her head and what she’ll say. • In fact Julia is a sensitive idealistic nature and is always searching for perfection in herself and in others.
“A born actress“ • She searches and searches for her own identity, then she finds her love. But she goes through disappointment. She tries to find herself, to understand herself and her environment. • As a result the received spiritual experience enriches her as a person and helps her to come up to a new step in her creativity.
