NCDP Third Cycle: Coaching and Coach Education 2006 – 2008
Benefits of a structured coaching and coach education n Participation rates in sports are improved n Sports performance is enhanced n Standards of coaching are improved n The profile of coaching is enhanced n More coaches are enticed into the system n Resource usage is maximised n Up-to-the-minute information is constantly available
National Coaching Development Programme: Record n NCTC and 56 NGBs – Cycle 1 1993 -1998 n ISC, NCTC and NGBs – Cycle 2 – 1999 -2004 n Over 39 sports running accredited courses n Over 600 (coach education) tutors have been trained n Over 30, 000 coaches have been certified (mainly at Intro and Level 1) n NCDP Cycle 3 2006 – 2008: To be agreed

Coaching policy, resources & research a) DAST, ISC, NCTC, NGBs make clear statements on the importance of coaching / coach education to Irish sport b) Commitment by all to targets set in NCDP 3 c) Provide a resource base to develop coaching / coach education in Ireland, in context of ISC / SCNI; Governments policies; NGB policies d) Research: Best international practice; coaching / coach education in Ireland
2. Capacity of NGBs in coaching / coach education n Professional/volunteer personnel & tutor support n Training for personnel in NCDP implementation n Financial packages of support for NCDP work n Specific targets for each year – Pathway and L 1, L 2, L 3 (syllabus/course outline, courses, coaches) n NGB, NCTC and ISC management of work
3. NCDP Coach Education Ladder a) Complete the revision of NCDP ladder, in line with LTPAD/LISPA and coaches in context of their work b) Level 3 – full implementation in 2006 c) Develop a Certificate in Coaching Children d) Level 4 – define and prepare for implementation (2007/2008)
4. Local coach education/support a) Local Sport Partnerships: Support running of courses for local coaches b) CPDs, seminars, workshops and coach networks in clubs, schools and at LISPA phases
