America In Its Birth. The name “America” comes from an ltalian businessman called Amerigo Vespucci, who sailed to South America between 1499 and 1502. Many tribes inhabitted the territory of America. They spoke over three hundred separate languages. So me of which were as different from one another as English is from Chinese. To many people the tepee is a symbol of the Amerindian way of life. Their ancestors had already been living there for maybe 50, 000 years when Columbus stepped on to the beach in Salvador.
