UN peacekeeping force consists of: • 85. 000 serving troops and military observers, • 52. 333 international civilian personnel, • 13. 056 police personnel, • 11. 709 local civilian staff, • 2. 025 UN volunteers UN peacekeepers are often called “Blue Berets” or “Blue Helmets” because they wear either berets or helmets in light blue colour.
Fact File • Peacekeeping refers to activities that tend to create conditions that favour lasting peace in countries torn by conflicts. • International forces are controlled by the United Nations Organization. But the UN does not have its own military force, it depends on contributions from Member States. Thus, there are people of different nationalities, from different countries, Russia included.
UN peacekeeping forces have two important departments: • Departments of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO): observing the area of the conflict helping refugees return to their homes disarming local soldiers • Department of Field Support (DFS): communications, information technology, logistics supporting and expertising in the area of personnel finance and budget
Past Peacekeeping Operations were held in: • Africa (Angola, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Liberia, Somalia, Sudan, Congo), • Americas (the Dominican Republic, Haiti, El Salvador, Guatemala), • Asia and the Pacific (Cambodia, Afghanistan and Pakistan, Tajikistan, West New Guinea), • Europe (Croatia, Herzegovina, Georgia), • Middle East (Iran-Iraq, Iraq-Kuwait, Syria).
Present Peacekeeping Operations are being held in: Afghanistan Central African Republic Somalia
• In 1988 UN Peacekeeping Forces were awarded by the Nobel Peace Prize. • The «International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers» is the 29 th of May.
