As any field of investigation moves forward, the modifying and refining of its terminology, together with the clarifying of its assumptions is an ever-increasing necessity. Nevertheless the term “meaning” is still with us and it needs unceasing critical examination. How to adequate is it? We will try to find a solution.

The meaning of “meaning” 1. The word meaning serves to characterize the systematic relevancies that are involved in language. 2. “Meaning” is to be regarded as a complex of contextual relations and phonetics, grammar, lexicography, and semantics each handles its own components of the complex in its appropriate context.

How do I understand the “meaning”

I have been haunted by rhetorical query of Leo Spitzer, he asked: “By what miracle have sound and meaning been joined? ”

And according to this philosophical question I looked for opinions and ideas which can distinguish my point of view from others which have already been the standard definition of word “meaning”.

When we speak of “a” meaning, or “the” meaning, or “this” meaning, we automatically appear to erect it into an entity, to reify it. But this ideas are not scientific investigation. My point of view is based on the assumption of traditional philosophical outlook, still respected among people today.

As Spitzer said sound co-exists with meaning. He meant all abstract things are joint with the meaning. In philosophy, in order to understand our life, the mankind firstly we should identify the meaning of the Universe. The brilliant philosophers devoted their life to long term investigations in various spheres to find the main core of our existence, the meaning of our existence…

In conclusion, I want to add that retaining the word meaning for use in the abstract, generalized application, describing a necessary component of the data of language itself, is justifiable.
