• Compulsory education in children aged 5 to 16 years (12 years) • The education system is divided into two sectors: • state (state school) - 93% of children • private (private school) - 7% of children • 1988 - introduced a single State Education Standard (National Curriculum)

Stages of the education system • • early childhood education (Pre-school) primary education (Primary School) secondary education (Secondary School) Further and Higher Education (Further and Higher Education)

Pre-school education (From 3 to 5 years) kindergartens and pre-school classes (nursery school, playgroup - public kindergarten, kindergarten - a private kindergarten)

Primary education (from 5 to 11 - 12 years) • from 5 to 7 years old - school for kids (infant school state-school / pre-preparatory school is a private school). • from 7 till 11 or 12 years of age, primary school • (junior school - state school / preparatory school is a private school)

What next? ? ? • Further education (Further Education) -the academic degree does not give Higher education (Higher Education) - the possibility of obtaining the academic degree

Secondary education (11 - 12 to 16 years old) • public secondary schools: • United secondary school (comprehensive school), the classic school (grammar school) • private secondary school: public school (public school) • Certificate (certificate) of secondary education with GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education)

further education • special secondary education • training programs meet the needs and interests of students of any age • certificate of completion of training institutions of the system of further education (GNVQ = General National Vocational Qualification)

higher education • colleges, universities, polytechnics • preparatory College for high school students (6 th Form College) - from 16 to 18 years • General certificate of advanced level of education GCE/A Level (General Certificate of Education Advanced Level) -

• certificate of secondary education with GCSE = the certificate of incomplete secondary education (9 classes of secondary school) • certificate of GCE/A Level = the certificate about the average (full) education (11 classes) + a preparatory course of the University

• bachelor's degree (Bachelor''s Degree) • 3 -4 years of training on day time branch of high school • master's degree (Master's Degree) • + 1 year of training on day time branch of high school • doctor degree (Doctor's Degree) • + 3 or more years of research works on any topic + defense of dissertation
