What is STELLA? ØTwo robotic 1. 2 m, f/8 and f/8. 4 Alt/Az telescopes to study STELLar Activity. ØObserving in fully unattended mode, including safe modes during bad-weather periods. ØIt is intended for long-term observations spanning years, not for short programs. ØA single instrument per telescope – not a multi-purpose telescope.

Which instruments? Two telescopes, two instruments. SES ØEchelle Spectrograph, fiberfed, R 55000 Ø 380 -860 nm, fixed format Wi. FSIP ØWide-field imager, 22’ Fo. V, Strømgren, Johnson, and Sloan filters plus H Ø 4 kx 4 k STA chip, 0. 32 arcsec/pixel

GRB 110402, co-added 60 x 20 sec HAT 12 r’=12. 5 m, 23. 4. 2011 texp=40 min STELLA 1&2: üSimultaneous high-res spectra (R~55000) and widefield imager (22’x 22’, full Johnson, Strömgren and Sloan filter set + H ). üExtreme long-term and fast-reaction modes. üExclusive access. üFully reduced data (plus data products) …lots of experience & algorithms (java) HD 1, V=7 m 43, combined spectrum
How? Generic publisher/subscriber schema. Events are generated in the publisher and passed to registered subscribers. Advantages: ØSubscribers may be introduced as needed. They can be incorporated into the running system. ØBugs in this new software will not back-react on the core system as they run on a different virtual machine.

Work-flow ØSplit into parallel and sequential tasks. ØAdd a watchdog for execution hangs. ØAllow errors to alter the sequence. We use an XML-based sequence definition

Defining targets ØXML-based target description. ØAstrometric target data and field-of-view are filled in from the (local) UCAC-2 catalogue or using SOAP on Vizie. R. ØInstrumentation requirements must be specified by user. ØUser might add supplementary observing constraints.

Portable? Ø 100% java, should run almost anywhere. What has to be done? üDefine possible commands. üPut them together to meaningful sequences in an sequencer XML-file. üImplement the command servers (telescope, CCD, guider, …). üConfigure the SCS.
