The State School of Mine

HISTORY v 21 October 1773 is the birthday of the whole higher technical education in Russia. It is the date when the State School of Mines, Geology, mining engineering, metallurgy, oil and gas industry was established.

v Originally the place for the School of Mine, now also known as «Gorny institute» , was located on the corner of the 22 d line of Vasileostrovsky Island the Neva embankment in a set of two buildings redeemed from P. B. Sherement’ev.

v. The opening ceremony was held in 1774. The plan assumed that students had to study 3 -3, 5 years. Until 1792 «Gornyj» was funded by the ore industrialists. Then the same year the School started to be maintained by the state.

v By the end of the 18 -th century 108 people studied in «Gornij» . For their practical trainings an «exemplary mine» was build in the courtyard, first «laboratories» were opened (furnaces and рудопромышленные верстаки). v 1804. The School was transformed into the Cadet Corp. v 1811. Realization of Voronihin’s project. v 1817. The Russian Mineralogical Society was founded v 1818. The United Museum was organized, which included mineral, physical and modeling offices. v 1824. Over 500 students. v 1825. Another journal was introduced - «Gornij journal» - the oldest journal of it’s kind, which published such famous figures of science and technology as P. P. Anosov, P. L. Chebyshev, D. I. Mendeleev and many others. v After March 1833 - «Gornij» Cadec Corp was renamed as Institute of Mining Engineering Corps and after 1866 - finally The Mine Institute.

ARCHITECTURE v These days the building complex consists of 7 Studying buildings, administrative building, including a church, and a separate building for the canteen. All done in the Classicism style.

v A lot of international programs in «Gornij» . v Students at «Gornij» have 2 exam week through the year. They have lectures and seminars and write their course papers straight from the first year. v The institute has all modern conveniences

ACHIEVEMENTS AND PEOPLE v Latest achievemets February 5, 2012 scientists from «Gornij» reached the surface of the subglacial Lake Vostok in Antarctica at a depth of 3769. 3 meters.

v. The Lake was isolated from the Earth’s atmosphere for ages. This discovery allows to study paleoclimate on Earth for the past millions of years. Besides, new forms of life can be discovered. v. The success of the expedition was achieved due to modern technologies developed in «Gornij»

v Famous people Dmitrij Nalivkin - (1889 present) - Russian Soviet geologist and paleontologist. Stalin Prize, First Class (1946) for geological work, that made possible the creation of the resource base for the aluminum industry in the Urals. Alexander Karpinsky (18471936) - Russian geologist, from May 1917 until the end of his life was the first elected president of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

MODERN FEATURES OF THE UNIVERSITY’S DEVELOPMENT v For realization of development programme “National Research University” an equipment set for analysis of nanomaterials and research of chemical reactions was brought into service, an equipment set of blasting protected video endoscopic equipment “Slim Borehole Scanner”
