The soul of New-York “What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul. ” Pensées. Blaise Pascal 7 novembre 2002 Alexis DOSSIN - Vincent LUBINEAU
The soul of New-York The Road to Redemption How can one think of the Ground Zero space other than spiritually? The recent history of the place as much as the recommendation of the committee invite us to explore this perspective. It is by making one’s way between monuments which physically symbolize the stages of a spiritual journey from past to future, death to life, despair to hope, affliction to confidence: a metaphor of the human condition in which man, after discouragement and self-examination, finds in himself the strength to rise up and go forward. 7 novembre 2002 Alexis DOSSIN - Vincent LUBINEAU

The soul of New-York The Memorial The preferred place for commemorative or patriotic ceremonies, the Memorial is at the meeting point of the two solar axes of the September 11 attacks, thus forming the heart of the memorial, an interfaith place of worship. The Memorial is in the form of a truncated cone of brushed aluminum facets. The two openings face the site of the towers. The facade is made up of as many aluminum blades as there were victims in the attacks. Inside the memorial, black marble plaques bear the names of the victims in gold letters. These plaques are lit by the sun through the slits. In the center a sacred eternal flame burns in memory of the dead. Three tiers of seats allow the public to pause for meditation. 7 novembre 2002 Alexis DOSSIN - Vincent LUBINEAU

The soul of New-York The Missing Persons Chessboard What remains of our passage through life on earth when those who have loved us have gone? We are left with a few objects whose history and ownership none can trace. So it is with the unidentified objects of the WTC. By walking among these signs of life the visitor will be able to relive these tragic moments. On the site of the first tower is a chessboard made of flagstones. In the centre of each black flagstone is a column of translucent resin containing the remains of unidentified objects. More of these objects are encapsulated in the translucent white flagstones which are lit from below. The columns are of various sizes. The chessboard is closed to the north and isolated from the rest of the city by a glass wall. 7 novembre 2002 Alexis DOSSIN - Vincent LUBINEAU
