BACKGROUND • My interest for gender started in the labour movement in the 90 s. • Training through ZRA to be peer educator and do counselling and guidance course. • Became councillor of Kasiya Ward 2011 • Chosen to be the gender champion for Livingstone City Council in 2012 • Played a key role in ensuring the adoption of the Gender Action Plan of the Council. 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA

Objectives • To see to it that sanitation improves in Kasiya Ward. • To promote Early Childhood Care and Development. • To ensure the development of physical infrastructure. • Information dissemination on gender issues. 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA

KEY ACTIVITIES Infrastructure development : • Building of a Bridge(1) • Sinking of Boreholes (15) • Construction of public Toilets (8) • Construction of Schools (2) • Construction of Health posts (2) • Construction of Makeshift pre school (1) • Construction of Teachers houses(2) • Provided leadership and initiated projects, lobbied and advocated for development.

CHALLENGES • Ward Development Fund not enough to sustain the programmes community • Political party cadres interfering in issues of Local Authority land allocation. • Some of the people in the ward still don't accept gender equality. 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA

LESSON LEARNED AND INNOVATION • I have learnt that I can find partners to solve problems in the community. • as opposed to always seeking funds from Government. As Area Councillor, I can mobilise resources to meet some of the challenges the ward is facing. • Women can really foster development within the community • Patience is required when changing community views and traditional for example relating to gender equality. 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA

SUSTAINABILITY AND REPLICATION • Continue working with partners and identify more. • Pass on information to Councillors so that they can learn from my experience that other than CDF and WDF you can mobilise communities to act together and use local resources. (mud and pole) • Teach other leaders in the community so that development can continue within the ward. 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA

Next steps • Draft Ward Development plan follows: - • Forty Boreholes to be sank (15 done 25 remaining) • Facilitate the building of Medical personnel’s houses, (3 done ) • Mothers Shelter (1) • lobby for more Nurses and Clinical officers (1 nurse ) • 10 teachers houses needed(2 done ) • Continue lobbying for a Boarding Secondary School, • Lobby for a school at Kasiya Health Post (currently using a make shift school ) 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA

Next steps Continued • Lobby for a Health and Police Post at Kangongo, Natebe • Facilitate the construction of a market in Libuyu Site and Service • Facilitate the construction of an office for the Area Councillor. • Lobby for construction of Libraries for all schools in Kasiya Ward. • Endeavour to construct a Government School and Police Post in Libuyu Site and Service. 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA
