How was Titanic built • Lord William Pirrie was the Chairman of Haarland Wolfe a ship-building company. • They started to build it in 1908 • He wanted to build the biggest most luxurious ship in the world. • He brought his idea to White Star Line. • They agreed and decided to build it in Belfast, Ireland.

White Star Line vs Cunard Line • White Star Lines main competition was the Cunard Line • The Cunard Line had two of the biggest ships in the world • They were the Mauritania and Luisitania • The main reason of the Titanic being built was that it be better than Cunard Lines own

Titanic Facts • The Titanic was 883 ft long • It was 90 ft longer than the Luisitania and • • • Mauritania The Titanic could 3500 crew and passengers The Titanic had a massive 9 decks The whole of the ship had to be built by hand The engines were the size of a two-storey house 6700 tonnes when fully laiden

First Class • The first class was the most expensive ticket on the • • Titanic. They wanted to make the most money from First-class The most space was given to first-class even though it had the fewest The design drawn by an Irish man Thomas Andrews designed the water tight compartments not to go all the way to the top in case it cramped the space for first class This could have prevented it from sinking

Second Class • The second class was mostly made up of teachers or doctors • The people in second class had made their money through their jobs • The fares ranged from £ 25 -£ 40

Third Class • Titanic was aiming to make most money from • • first class but actually made more from Third Class. The people in Third class described it as 2 nd class. The people in 3 rd class were’nt going for a holiday but to emigrate The average price for a singular ticket was £ 7 A family ticket cost in between £ 25 to £ 40

The Journey • The journey of the Titanic was from Southampton to Cherbourg (France) and Queenstown (Cobh) • Its final destination was to be in New York • It was hoping to complete a 6 day Atlantic journey • It was the Titanic’s maiden voyage

The Sinking • The Titanic ignored seven iceberg warnings from • • numerous other ships On April 14 th around eleven o’clock they saw an iceberg dead ahead It is believed if they slowed down and hit the iceberg head on it would’ve with stood the impact Titanic would have stayed afloat if only 4 of her watertight compartments flooded. Unfortunately, 5 compartmentsfloaded With the extra compartment flooded it slowly started to tip forward

The Sinking (cont) • Shortly after they collided with the iceberg the • • crew & captain realised she would sink They instantly started lowering down the lifeboats with only women and children in them The Titanic was only able to stay afloat for 2 hours & 40 mins after hitting the iceberg The captain and designer went down with the ship but not Bruce Ismay who decided to abandon the ship he owned The estimated deaths was 1513.

Captain EJ Smith • This was Captain Smith’s last voyage before retiring • Captain Smith was involved in another collision this time captaining British warship HMS Hawke which lost her prow 2 compartments filled one of her propeller shafts twisted but she was able to limp back to Southampton

The afterstory • After White Star Line ploughed so much money in to Titanic it went bankrupt 22 years after • They started giving away some of their ships to Oceania for free • They actually joined with arch-rivals Cunard Line which didn’t work out and went bankrupt also a few days later.

The victims of Titanic • When all the life boats left approx. 1500 people were still left on Titanic • The estimated death total was 1500 • Most victims of the tragedy were from steerage.
