the queen elizabeth ii (elizabeth alexandra mary) is head of state of the uk and 15 other commonwealth realms. the elder daughter of king george vi and queen elizabeth, she was born on 21 st april in 1926 and became queen at the age of 25, and has reigned through more than five decades of enormous social change and development.
on her accession on 6 february 1952, queen elizabeth became head of the commonwealth and queen regnant of seven independent commonwealth countries: the united kingdom, canada, australia, new zealand, south africa, pakistan and ceylon.
her coronation service took place in 1953 and was the first to be televised.
the queen is married to prince philip, duke of edinburgh and has four children (charles, anne, andrew, and edward) and eight grandchildren.
