Hypothesis The choice of the names is related to the names of famous people from pop culture and characters from English literature The aim of our work is an exposure of the most widespread English names. A subject of research is a variety of the English names. A research object is a group of the most widespread English names. For the achievement of this aim we should decide next tasks: Ø 1. To give short description of origin and meanings of the English names. Ø 2. To analyze which male and female names are popular Ø 4. To conduct the sociological survey among pupils «What English name do you know? » and to interpret a result.
History of the English names
After the Norman conquest ancient British names disappeared. In 1313 -1314 there William the Conqueror were only 5 names in the list. The most popular names were William, Richard, Robert, Hugh and Ralph for boys and Mary, Joan, Agnes, Catherine, Margaret and Ann for girls.
Bible Also people gave names from the Bible. But then the church shortened the list of the names. The real name was the name given after baptizing.
Church In the 16 th century the puritans separated themselves from the church. It meant that they gave their children the Latin names but of their own.
