There are two branches of the legal profession: solicitor The majority of solicitor only have full rights of audience in the magistrates and country courts. barrister Barrister have rights of audience at all levels in the structure including the House of Lords.

I will tell you a little about duties of a Solicitor. The traditional picture of the English lawyer is that the solicitor is the general practitioner, confined mainly to the office. If a person has a legal problem and needs the assistance of the law, or because he has a dispute he will go to a solicitor and seek his advice in a personal interview. There is no end to variety of matters which can appear on a solicitor’s desk. They deal with all the day to day work of preparing legal documents for buying and selling houses, making wills, divorce. Solicitors work on court cases for their clients outside the court. The relationship between solicitor and client is based on professional confidence.

And I will tell you a little about duties of a Barristers are experts in the interpretation of the Law. They advise on really difficult legal matters (this is known as “taking counsel’s opinion”). So barristers spend a lot of time at paper work apart from their actual appearances in court where they wear wigs and gowns in keeping with the extreme formalities of the proceedings. His work includes the drafting of opinions on difficult points of law, the settling of pleadings and advice on evidence and procedural matters. Only barristers can become judges in an English Court above a Magistrates' Court.

In the matter of ethics… The first element is enlargement of individual autonomy, good faith in dealings, truth seeking, full disclosure, reasonable limits on adversarial conduct and adherence to public interest.

The need to be competent The second element of professionalism is professional competence, which must include independence in judgment and advice. Competence should also involve an efficient allocation of resources.

Professional wisdom… There is still another element of professional competence, and that is practical wisdom. It calls for a broad comprehension of the role of law and of the values society cherishes, an understanding of human beings, and a mature perspective.

Civility In the context of professionalism, civility covers not only surface po liteness or courteous treatment of opponents. Civility has a much deeper meaning than cosmetic courtesy. We mean respect for individual dignity and worth.
