You can see the two red lines in front of the benches on each side of the chamber. This is - as part of tradition. The distance between these two lines - the length of two swords. In the old days, when "members of Parliament used to wear swords, it was dangerous, if they are angry at each other. Thus, these two lines are here to remind the members of parliament that they should not start a fight, and they can not cross the line when they speak in the debate.
The Speaker
The Speaker of the House of Commons The Speaker of the House of Commons chairs debates in the Commons Chamber and the holder of this office is an MP who has been elected by other MPs.
The Speaker of the House of Commons The Speaker is the chief officer and highest authority of the House of Commons and must remain politically impartial at all times. During debates the Speaker keeps order and calls MPs to speak.
Election of the Speaker John Bercow was elected House of Commons Speaker on 22 June 2009. The Speaker was elected using an exhaustive secret ballot system, the first time this procedure had been used for the election of a Speaker.
Deputy Chairmen of Ways and Means
Deputy Chairmen of Ways and Means In Committee of the whole House, the Chair will be taken by a Deputy Chairman in the absence of the Chairman of Ways and Means. The election rules for the Deputy Speakers state that the First Deputy Chairman of Ways and Means is elected from the same side of the House as the Speaker. The Second Chairman of Ways and Means is elected from the opposite side of the House from which the Speaker was elected.
The armchair of the speaker
Speaker's Office The Speaker acts as chairman during debates in the House of Commons, calls MPs to speak, and sees that the rules laid down by the House are followed. The Speaker is the chief officer and highest authority of the House of Commons and must remain politically impartial at all times. The Speaker also represents the Commons to the monarch, the Lords and other authorities and chairs the House of Commons Commission.
Dragging the Speaker of the House of Commons
When a new Speaker of the House of Commons is elected, the successful candidate is physically dragged to the Chair by other MPs.
This custom has its roots in the Speaker's function to communicate the Commons' opinions to the monarch. Historically, if the monarch didn't agree with the message being communicated then the early death of the Speaker could follow. Therefore, as you can imagine, previous Speakers required some gentle persuasion to accept the post.
