Objectives • To enhance students’ ability in using accounting information for business development and their generic skills as required by today’s business world. 3
Background • Initiated by The Hong Kong Institute of Accredited Accounting Technicians Limited (HKIAAT) since 2002. • A new competition format is adopted since last year. • Last year it attracts more than 1, 000 students from secondary schools and tertiary institutes. 4
Entry requirements • Full-time Secondary 4 to 7 students. • Admission is on a team basis with four members (could be from different levels), all of whom must study at the same school. • Each school shall nominate a maximum of FIVE teams. • Deadline for registration deadline: before 5: 00 pm, 22 January 2010 (Friday). 5
Awards • Champion team : $3, 000 cash prize and individual trophies • 1 st Runner-up team : $2, 000 cash prize and individual trophies • 2 nd Runner-up team : $1, 500 cash prize and individual trophies • Best presenter : $500 and trophy • Merit teams (3 awards) : Trophy for each team • Outstanding performance awards : • Certificate of participation will be issued to all participants. Certificate for each team 6

Competition format • There will be two rounds of competition: ü 1 st round – Written report ü 2 nd round – Public oral presentation 10
1 st round – Written report • Each participating team is required to submit a written report in either English or Chinese. • Questions will be based on the Annual Report of Sa Sa International Limited. • The questions will be announced on the HKIAAT’s website on 23 January 2010. 11
Guidelines for submission of written report • Length of the report : • English report : not more than 20 pages of A 4 papers • Chinese report : not more than 13 pages of A 4 papers • Font type and size : English - Arial (12 points); Chinese – 新細 明體 (11 points) • Double line spacing. • The written report SHOULD NOT be bound nor put in any folders/files. • Separate cover page for each report with names of team members and contact details. • The content pages SHOULD NOT include the names of team members and institute. 12
Guidelines for submission of written report (Cont’d) • Submit two hardcopies together with a soft copy (both PDF and word files) saved in a CD-Rom. • Submit to the HKIAAT by hand. • Submission deadline: before 5: 00 pm, 26 February 2010. 13

2 nd round – Public oral presentation • The list of SIX finalist teams will be shortlisted announced on 31 March 2010. • They are required to give a 15 -minute oral presentation. • Date of Competition: Saturday morning, 17 April 2009 • Venue: Hong Kong Federation of Youth Group, 21 Pak Fuk Road, North Point • Other participating teams are also welcome to enrol for attending the oral presentation. • The oral presentation will be conducted in English or Cantonese, depending on the choice indicated on the registration format. • Awards will be presented on the same day. 16

Question format Two key areas will be covered: - Analyze the company’s performance - Propose business strategies for the company to sustain growth Remarks: Students shall refer to the Sa Sa Annual Reports when preparing for the written report. However, your research shall not be bound by this. 18
Example : Questions for 2008 Competition: Selected company: - MTR Corporation Limited Requirements: • To evaluate the past performance of MTR Corp. : • • Business performance (ratios, SWOT analysis) • Synergy effect of merger • • Social responsibility and sustainability development Importance of development expenses To draft a Business Blue Print for MTR which covers the areas of product, marketing, financial and human resources and suggest the appropriate performance measurement indicators for MTR 19

Adjudicators’ comments for last year’s participants 1. Written Report • Unprofessional in report writing : no table of contents, executive summary, conclusion and recommendations. • Poor report organization: the structure is not systematic and each section are not inter-related. • No solid data or clear calculation to justify recommendations. • Underlying assumptions for analysis and recommendations are not stated. • Do not quote references 22

Oral Presentation • Team members do not introduce himself/ herself before starting their presentations. • Relied heavily on cue cards. • Many recommendations are creative, but not feasible. • During Q&A session, students are suggested to have a discussion among members in reaching consensus before replying the questions. 23
