The history of well-known oil companies
Weatherford is one of the largest international oil and natural gas service companies. The company provides products and services for drilling, evaluation, completion, production and intervention of oil and natural gas wells, along with pipeline construction and commissioning. Headquartered in Switzerland, Weatherford currently operates in more than 100 countries across the globe and employs more than 60, 000 people. The company has a substantial presence in the Middle East. The company was founded in 1941 in Weatherford, Texas as the Weatherford Spring Company by Jesse E. Hall In 1948, the company was renamed Weatherford Oil Tool Company (WOTCO). From its inception, the company pioneered an innovative technique and equipment for the cementing of cased-hole oil wells. Originally marketed to U. S. well owners, Weatherford drilling and casing equipment was soon being used in the oil fields of Venezuela by the Gulf Oil Company.
Schlumberger Limited is the world's largest oilfield services company. Schlumberger employs over 118, 000 people of more than 140 nationalities working in approximately 85 countries.  Its principal offices are in Houston, Paris, and the Hague. Schlumberger was founded in 1926 by French brothers Conrad and Marcel Schlumberger as the Electric Prospecting Company. The company recorded the first -ever electrical resistivity well log in Merkwiller-Pechelbronn, France in 1927. Today Schlumberger supplies the petroleum industry with services such as seismic acquisition and processing, formation evaluation, well testing and directional drilling, well cementing and stimulation, artificial lift, well completions, flow assurance and consulting, and software and information management. The company is also involved in the groundwater extraction and carbon capture and storage industries. 
Royal Dutch Shell
Royal Dutch Shell , commonly known as Shell, is an Anglo– Dutch multinational oil and gas company headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands and with its registered office in London, United Kingdom. It is the biggest company in the world in terms of revenue (after Exxon. Mobil) and one of the six oil and gas "supermajors". Shell is also one of the world's most valuable companies. Shell topped the Fortune 500 list of largest companies in the world.  The Royal Dutch Shell Group was created in February 1907 through the merger of two rival companies - Royal Dutch Petroleum Company and the "Shell" Transport and Trading Company Ltd of the United Kingdom, founded by Marcus Samuel. It was a move largely driven by the need to compete globally with then dominant American petroleum company, John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil, and as a strategy to face the challenges brought by the crisis of 1907. The terms of the merger gave 60% ownership of the new Group to the Dutch arm and 40% to the British Royal Dutch Petroleum Company was a Dutch company founded in 1890 by Jean Baptiste August Kessler along with Henri Deterding, when a Royal charter was granted by King William III of the Netherlands to a small oil exploration and production company known as "Royal Dutch Company for the Working of Petroleum Wells in the Dutch East Indies".

Rockefeller's Standard Oil company, and was formed on November 30, 1999, by the merger of Exxon and Mobil. It is affiliated with Imperial Oil which operates in Canada Exxon. Baker Hughes is one of the world's largest oilfield services companies. It operates in over 90 countries, providing the oil and gas industry with products and services for drilling, formation evaluation, completion, production and reservoir consulting. Baker Hughes has its headquarters in the America Tower in the American General Center in Neartown, Houston. Baker Hughes is the combination of many companies that have developed and introduced technology to serve the petroleum service industry. Their combined history dates back to the early 1900 s. During its history, Baker Hughes has acquired and assimilated numerous oilfield pioneers including: Brown Oil Tools, CTC, EDECO, and Elder Oil Tools (completions); Milchem and Newpark (drilling fluids); EXLOG (mud logging); Eastman Christensen and Drilex (directional drilling and diamond drill bits); Teleco (measurement while drilling); Tri-State and Wilson (fishing tools and services); Aquaness, Chemlink and Petrolite (specialty chemicals), Western Atlas (seismic exploration, well logging), BJ Services Company (pressure pumping).
BP is a British multinational oil and gas company headquartered in London, United Kingdom. It is the third-largest energy company and fourth-largest company in the world measured by 2011 revenues and is one of the six oil and gas "supermajors". It is vertically integrated and operates in all areas of the oil and gas industry, including exploration and production, refining, distribution and marketing, petrochemicals, power generation and trading. It also has renewable energy activities in biofuels and wind power. In May 1901, William Knox D'Arcy was granted a concession by the Shah of Iran to search for oil, which he discovered in May 1908. This was the first commercially significant find in the Middle East. On 14 April 1909, the Anglo-Persian Oil Company (APOC) was incorporated as a subsidiary of Burmah Oil Company to exploit this. APOC and the Armenian businessman Calouste Gulbenkian were the driving forces behind the creation of Turkish Petroleum Company (TPC) in 1912; and by 1914, APOC held 50% of TPC shares. TPC was promised an oil exploration concession in Mesopotamia (now Iraq) by the Ottoman government.

Halliburton (Oak Park) offices in Westchase and in Chinatown in Houston On March 1, 1921, the Halliburton “method and means of excluding water from oil wells” was assigned a patent from the U. S. Patent Office. Halliburton invented the revolutionary cement jet mixer, to eliminate handmixing of cement, and the measuring line, a tool used to guarantee cementing accuracy. It is engaged in every aspect of the oil, gas, and geothermal energy industries, including exploration and production; refining, marketing and transport; chemicals manufacturing and sales; and power generation. Chevron is one of the world's six "supermajor" oil companies. For the past five years (through 2012) Chevron has been ranked as America's third largest corporation in the Fortune 500. In 2011 it was named the 16 th largest public company in the world by Forbes Global 2000. Chevron is one of the largest corporations in the world by revenue. Chevron traces its roots to an oil discovery in Pico Canyon (now the Pico Canyon Oilfield) north of Los Angeles. The discovery led to the formation, in 1879, of the Pacific Coast Oil Company (also known as "Coast Oil"), the oldest predecessor of Chevron Corporation.
Lukoil is Russia's second largest oil company and its second largest producer of oil. In 2009, the company produced 97. 615 million tons of oil; 1. 972 million barrels per day (313, 500 m 3/d) Lukoil was formed in 1991 when three state-run, western Siberian companies named after the respective town in Khanty–Mansi Autonomous Okrug that each was based, Langepasneftegaz, Urayneftegaz, and Kogalymneftegaz, merged. The initials of the three companies are preserved in the name Lukoil. The central figure in the company's founding was the Soviet deputy minister of oil production Vagit Alekperov. He came to believe the only way Russians could compete against western companies was to copy their business model. That meant vertically integrating the three branches of the industry - exploration, refining, and distribution - that were strictly separate under the old Soviet system. It is one of the largest tax payers of the Russian Federation, and the amount of taxes paid in 2010 is US$30. 2 billion. It was one of the first Russian companies to receive full listing on the London Stock Exchange. In 1994, Lukoil became the first company to begin offering shares of stock on the new Russian Trading System
Rosneft is it integrated oil company majority owned by the Government of Russia. Rosneft became Russia’s leading extraction and refinement company after purchasing assets of former oil giant Yukos at state-run auctions. In march 2013, after completing acquisition of TNK-BP, Rosneft became the largest publicly traded oil company. Rosneft was established in 1993 as a Unitary enterprise on the basis of assets previously held by Rosneftegaz, the successor to the Soviet Union's Ministry of Oil and Gas. During the early 90 s almost all Russian local oil companies and refineries were extracted from Rosneft to form ten integrated companies. Later their number was halved as a result of acquisitions. On 29 September 1995, a Government of Russia Resolution № 971 transformed Rosneft into an open joint stock company. In October 1998, the Russian government appointed Sergey Bogdanchikov as president. The company had only two obsolete refineries in addition to several low-productive and poorly managed oilproducing assets. Several plans for the company's privatization were formed in the late 1990 s, but due to competition equal influential pretenders they were never fulfilled.
Transneft is a Russian state-controlled business responsible for the national oil pipelines. It was founded in 1993 and owns the largest oil pipeline system in the world, with a total network length of almost 50, 000 kilometres (31, 000 mi). Transneft transports about 93% of the oil produced in Russia. The company is headquartered in Moscow and led by Nikolay Tokarev. Transneft was established in accordance with Presidential Decree № 1403 dated 17 November 1992 and Russian Government Resolution № 810 dated 14 August 1993, and is the legal successor to the USSR Ministry of Oil Industry Main Production Department for Oil Transportation and Supplies (Glavtransneft), with 100% of shares belonging to the state. On 16 April 2007, Transnefteproduct, a company concerned with the transportation of refined oil products, was merged into Transneft.
