The History of Ipswich By Emily, Issy and Ellie
Introduction • A large town in the county (гра фство) of Suffolk • It is the county town of Suffolk. • In the past it was called‘Gippeswick’. • In 2011 the population was Ipswich 133, 384 but in the is here developed areas it is estimated at 180, 000
Ancient times • One of England’s oldest towns founded in Saxon (Саксы) times. (7 th or 8 th Century) • The area around Ipswich was important in the Roman times, as it had trade (торго вля) routes using the rivers Gipping and Orwell. • A large Roman villa (ви лла) was located in north west Ipswich. • At the collapse of the Roman Empire the town became a trade and communications link between East Britain and Europe.
• There were imports (и мпорт) as early as King Raewald (ruler of England 616 -624 AD) • There is a famous Saxon ship (кора бль) and treasure (сокро вище) burial (погребе ние) ground at Sutton Hoo. There is a museum with Saxon items. • 700 AD. Frisian potters (гонча р) from the Netherlands settled. They set up the first large scale potteries since the Romans. • The Vikings (Викинги) invaded in 869 ANCIENT TIMES
Mediaeval Times • King John granted the first town charter (ха ртия) in 1200 • The next 400 years – Ipswich made its money by trading Suffolk cloth (ткань) with Europe. • Religion was very important in Ipswich. There were 5 religious houses – 2 Augustinian priories, Grey friars, White friars and Black Friars. • A few hospitals – such as a leper (прокажённый) hospital of St Mary Magdalene. (founded 1199) • Middle Ages – Marian statue of Our Lady of Grace was a famous place of pilgrimage (пало мничество). It was visited by King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon his first wife
• During the Reformation (Реформа ция) this was taken to London to be burnt. • Cardinal Thomas Wolsey – born in Ipswich in 1475. he founded a college in the town in 1528 – this was one of the homes of Ipswich School (our school!) • At the time of Queen Mary Tudor – the Ipswich martyrs (му ченик) were burnt because of their Protestant beliefs. • 1824 – Dr George Birkbeck founded what is still today the library. • 1835 – Charles Dickens used Ipswich as a setting (время и место действия )for his book, The Pickwick Papers, after he stayed there. 18 TH, 19 TH AND 20 TH CENTURIES
