The Finnish-British Federation Debating Competition for Finnish Upper Secondary school students A regional semi-final for Satakunta
Why debating? n One learns to think. n One learns to speak English. n One learns to teamwork. n It is fun.
The basic idea n Teams of two compete against each other on a given topic. n The n One topic is called a motion. team is for the topic, the other is against it.
ORDER OF PROCEDURE 1 n The motion for each debate will be drawn by lot. n The debaters have had advance knowledge of the motions.
ORDER OF PROCEDURE 2 n Discussion of the topic 5 minutes
ORDER OF PROCEDURE 3 n Proposal of the motion 4 minutes n Opposing of the motion 4 minutes n Seconding the motion 3 minutes n Seconding for the opposition 3 minutes
ORDER OF PROCEDURE 4 n Floor debate 8 minutes maximum An opportunity for members of the audience to react to the debate. Points should be kept short and addressed to the chair.
