Tirade A tirade is a speech, usually consisting of a long string of violent, emotionally charged words.

Assertion a confident and forceful statement, usually made without giving evidence
Assertion or Argument? “I just know in my heart that what I believe is right, and that you are wrong” “I know that you are wrong, because I’ve studied the result of the recent survey on this topic”

Learning Activity Instructions: In this activity you will work with your group to change assertions to arguments. For example: The brightest students of Kazakhstan must be trilingual to create a better future for our nation. –Assertion The education system of Kazakhstan must provide a trilingual education for its students. The Telegraph reports that half the world’s population is expected to be speaking English by 2015. According to ethnologue. com, Russian is the 8 th most spoken language in the world. Knowledge of these languages along with Kazakh will give our students a competitive edge in the global community. Choose a volunteer to read.

What was that? ? ? What did you just read? Was it an argument? A tirade? It was simply a list of information – with no explanation. What does it mean to explain? To make a point clear or understandable. How can you use these in an argument? Can you use a list of information without an explanation?
Project Instructions: Work with your group. Use what you have learned to create a video advertisement. It can be on the topic, Keep Our School Clean! In your video you must include at least three of the following: an assertion, a list of information, a tirade, an argument to convince the audience to accept your campaign. Please be sure to get permission before you record anyone. When you finish, email the video to the teacher. You have 10 minutes. Must you include all the topics we discussed today? Can you record everyone? How much time do you have? Begin! Feedback: If possible, review videos then show to class.
