Heart The heart is one of the most importat organs in the entire human body. The adult human heart has a mass of between 250 and 300 grams and is about the size of a fist. It is located anterior to the vertebral column and posterior to the sternum. The average human heart, beating at 72 beats per minute, and pumps approximatelu 4, 75, 7 liters of blood per minute. The vascular system consist of three groups of vessels – arteries , veins, and capillaries
Structure of the Heart The heart wall is made of 3 layers: epicardium, myocardium and endocardium. • Epicardium. The epicardium is the outermost layer of the heart wall and is just another name for the visceral layer of the pericardium. • Myocardium. The myocardium is the muscular middle layer of the heart wall that contains the cardiac muscle tissue. • Endocardium is the simple squamous endothelium layer that lines the inside of the heart. .
