More Details on the Cold War ù ù ù After WWII, the U. S. was democratic, and the Soviet Union was Communist. The U. S. wanted to encourage free trade, while the Soviet Union was against it. They were also fairly equal in power, which caused tension as they vied for power. Russia was starting to take over parts of Eastern Europe, and was controlling them with Communist governments. The United States didn’t approve of the spread of Communism. When the U. S. started taking action to help oppressed countries and stop Communism, the Soviet Union expressed aggression.
The Cold War cont. The Communist countries were not happy with the fact that the U. S. was practicing isolationism and containment. ù The Cuban Missile Crisis occurred because the Soviet Union was insecure and scared of loosing control of Cuba. ù The Vietnam and Korean Wars happened for much of the same reasons, only serving to increase the tension between the U. S. and the Soviet Union. ù
More Details on the War on Terror Q Q On September 11 th, 2001, two planes crashed into the Twin Towers, one crashed into the Pentagon, and one was taken back over by the passengers and crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. It was headed to the White House. After that, President Bush declared that we were engaged in a war on terror.
War on Terror cont. Q Q We have sent troops to various places in the Middle East, as well as heightening airport security and taking other preventative measures. There have been numerous attempts at other terrorist activities, including bombing since 9/11. We are continuously trying to wipe out terrorism (containment). We are also using isolationism by refusing to accept any services or in any way give aid to terrorist organizations.
So… As you can see, even though the Cold War and the War on Terror are not very similar, we used similar foreign policy in both wars. The U. S. is using containment because they want to wipe out terrorism, just as they wanted to wipe out communism. We are also using isolation to show our disapproval, and to avoid supporting bad people.
