Cold War • An area of confrontation and competition between the United States and the Soviet Union that lasted from about 1946 -1990. 2
Iron Curtain • Term coined by Winston Churchill to describe the border between the Soviet satellite states and Western Europe. 3
Containment • Keeping communism within its present territory through the use of diplomatic, economic, and military actions. 4
Truman Doctrine • Program to fight communist aggression in Greece and Turkey. • Its goal was to aid “free peoples who are resisting outside pressures. ” 5
Marshall Plan • Program to relieve the problems in post-war Europe by giving those nations American aid to rebuild their economies. 6
Berlin Airlift • A response to Stalin’s blockade of Britain, American planes provided Berliners with food, medicine, and coal, for 11 months. 7
NATO • North Atlantic Treaty Organization • A mutual defense alliance between the United States and Western Europe. • Example of “collective security” 8
Warsaw Pact • A military alliance between the USSR and Eastern Europe. • This was a response to the formation of NATO. 9
Korean War • Police Action (War) between Soviet-controlled North Korea and American-controlled South Korea. • On June 25, 1950, North Korean forces attacked across the 38 th parallel, beginning the Korean War. • UN forces stepped in to try to protect South Korea. 10

Brinkmanship • The willingness to go to the brink of war to force the other side to back down. 12
Mutually Assured Destruction • Policy in which the US and the USSR hoped to deter nuclear war by building up enough weapons to destroy each other. 13
Eisenhower Doctrine • Stated that the United States would use force to help any nation threatened by communism. 14
Space Race • Competition between the U. S. and the U. S. S. R to develop space technology. • Began with the Soviets’ launch of a small satellite named Sputnik. • Resulted in the creation of NASA. 15
