Zeus & Europa
And gradually she lost her fear, and he Offered his breast for her virgin caresses, His horns for her to wind with chains of flowers Until the princess dared to mount his back Her pet bull's back, unwitting whom she rode. Then — slowly, slowly down the broad, dry beach — First in the shallow waves the great god set His spurious hooves, then sauntered further out 'til in the open sea he bore his prize Fear filled her heart as, gazing back, she saw The fast receding sands. Her right hand grasped A horn, the other lent upon his back Her fluttering tunic floated in the breeze. from Ovid’s Metamorphoses (Bk II: 863 -875) https: //en. wikipedia. org/wiki/Europa_(mythology)
• For a text translation, see also : “Poetry in Translation” http: //www. poetryintranslation. com/PITBR/Latin/Metamorph 2. htm#anchor_Toc 64106134 from Ovid’s Metamorphoses (Bk II: 833 -875)
In colour he was white as the snow that rough feet have not trampled and the rain-filled south wind has not melted. The muscles rounded out his neck, the dewlaps hung down in front, the horns were twisted, but one might argue they were made by hand, purer and brighter than pearl. His forehead was not fearful, his eyes were not formidable, and his expression was peaceful. Agenor’s daughter marvelled at how beautiful he was and how unthreatening. But though he seemed so gentle she was afraid at first to touch him. Soon she drew close and held flowers out to his glistening mouth. The lover was joyful and while he waited for his hoped-for pleasure he kissed her hands. He could scarcely separate then from now. At one moment he frolics and runs riot in the grass, at another he lies down, white as snow on the yellow sands.
…on the yellow sands. When her fear has gradually lessened he offers his chest now for virgin hands to pat and now his horns to twine with fresh wreaths of flowers. The royal virgin even dares to sit on the bull’s back, not realising whom she presses on, while the god, first from dry land then from the shoreline, gradually slips his deceitful hooves into the waves. Then he goes further out and carries his prize over the mid-surface of the sea. She is terrified and looks back at the abandoned shore she has been stolen from and her right hand grips a horn, the other his back, her clothes fluttering, winding, behind her in the breeze. http: //www. poetryintranslation. com/PITBR/Latin/Metamorph 2. htm#anchor_Toc 64106134

Europa and the Bull Europa had three sons fathered by Zeus: Minos, Rhadamanthus, and Sarpedon, the three of whom became three judges of the Underworld when they died. [12] In Crete she married Asterion also rendered Asterius and became mother (or stepmother) of his daughter Crete. He then revealed his true identity, and Europa became the first queen of Crete. Zeus gave her a necklace made by Hephaestus[20] and three additional gifts: Talos, Laelaps and a javelin that never missed. Zeus later re-created the shape of the white bull in the stars, which is now known as the constellation Taurus. http: //en. wikipedia. org/wiki/Europa_(mythology)
Zeus gave her presents: a necklace from Hepheastus a metal man named Talos, to protect Crete a hound that would always catch its prey a javelin that never missed

The Death of Procris by Piero di Cosimo Laelaps http: //en. wikipedia. org/wiki/File: Piero_di_Cosimo_013. jpg The hound, Laelaps, was also a gift from Zeus to Europa. The dog would catch anything it chased. It eventually was passed to Minos, who gave it away. It was sent to Thebes to protect the city from the Teumessian fox, which could never be caught. The paradox made Zeus angry, so he turned both magical animals to stone.

The Cult of the Bull Myths of Ancient Crete • Zeus and Europa had 3 sons – Minos – Rhadamanthys – Sarpedon They were raised by the king of Crete, Asterion. Rhadmanthys was known for his excellent legal code, copied by Sparta. Sarpedon loved the same girl as Minos. When the king died, Minos took over and banished his brothers (rivals). Minos and Rhadmanthys would become judges in Hades after they died. The 3 rd judge was Zeus’ son Aeacus, ruler of the Myrmidons on Aegina.
