The Big Bad Wolf: Modified Lung-o-Meter Experiment for Primary School Annie M. Whitaker and Patricia E. Molina Department of Physiology, Louisiana State University Health Science Center, New Orleans, LA Introduction Methods Results This year during Physiology Understanding (Ph. Un) Week we visited students ranging from pre-K to high school. It was critical that each experiment was modified to the appropriate age level and the physiological concepts were related to something which with the children were familiar. For the primary school students, we modified the lung-o-meter experiment to illustrate lung capacity. During the time we visited, the students were reading the story of the three little pigs. We explained lung capacity in terms of how much air the big bad wolf would need to blow out in order to blow down the brick house. As an added bonus, we also gave the students balloons so they could try to visualize how much air their lungs could hold. Methods Ø A one gallon plastic jug was labeled with different volumes representing the different houses in the story: 500 ml “straw house”, 1, 000 ml “stick house”, and 1, 500 ml “brick house”. Ø The jug was filled with water, capped, turned upside down into a basin of water and the cap removed. Ø Each student placed one end of a straw into the jug and took a deep breath exhaling into the other end of the straw. Ø Their lung capacity was the amount of water displaced by the air exhaled. Summary & Conclusions Ø By modifying the traditional lung-o-meter experiment, the students were clearly able to understand that those with a smaller lung capacity could blow down the straw house and those with a larger lung capacity could blow down the brick house. Ø In summary, we found that it is necessary to creatively modify experiments to address the specific needs of different age groups and to make physiology fun for students from 5 to 17 years of age.
