Mikhail Lermontov is an author of a huge number of beautiful poems and stories. His poems and stories are etalon because they excite people and touch the most delicate strings of their souls despite the fact that many years have passed from the day of his death.
A sculpture of the poet Mikhail Lermontov is installed in the center of Pyatigorsk. The monument was opened in 1889. The authors of the monument are a sculptor A. M. Opekushin and an architect N. A. Doroshenko. The monument has the status of an object of cultural heritage of federal importance. This monument is the first monument to a poet in Russia and one of the main attractions of Pyatigorsk.
The idea to mount the monument to a poet in Pyatigorsk appeared in 1870. It was the idea of one of the first Lermontov’s bibliographer lieutenant P. Martyanov and a main renter of Caucasus Mineral Waters A. M. Baykov.
In June 1871 the Emperor Alexander II gave a permission to organize fundraising for the monument installation in Pyatigorsk. Soon first voluntary contribution in sum of 2 rubles was received from two unknown peasants of taurian province
In 1875 the Special Commission has been established in Vladikavkaz. It monitored all installed monuments to the great Lermontov all over the country. They started to collect signatures. Russian intelligentsia and elite sent money for the monument.
A cheque of 1000 rubles was sent by the Prince Alexander Vasilchikov who was a second in the duel of Lermontov. Many years A. Bykov organized literary events and concerts and gave money for construction and restoration of the monument. The funds were gathered with Lermontov readings, concerts and lotteries.
In 1881 they announced a competition to design the monument. Neither the first nor the second of its tours, which received a total of more than 120 projects, gave any results. The third tour was presented with only 15 projects. A. M. Opekushin won the competition.
The monument was opened on the 16 th of August, 1889. Kosta Khetagurov took part in celebrations dedicated to the opening of monument.
The statue was represented to professionals and only then to local residents. After the sculpture installing they began to built a square as well as a pedestal for the monument.
It should be noted that the pedestal should be very beautiful and unique, so several bright and large boulders were brought from the Crimea. Several St. Petersburg professional craftsmen with A. M. Opekushin installed the pedestal. Due to this fact the height of the monument pedestal reached over five meters.
Bronze sculpture of the poet is installed on a granite pedestal which reminds a rock. Lermontov is depicted in moments of inspiration. For many ratings the monument is not only the best work of A. M. Opekushin, but it is the best monument to Lermontov in Russia.
On the front side of the pedestal there is a bronze wreath, lyre and a pen. At the top of the pedestal there is the inscription "M. Y. Lermontov" and at the lower part of the pedestal there is the inscription "16 August 1889 year". Behind the monument you can see Mashuk, at the foot of which the poet’s life finished. These details have big meaning - the past is at the back of Lermontov and the future is ahead of him.
In April 1946 the stone staircase after the project of G. K. Pisarenko was opened in the October Street.
The sculpture of Lermontov is made harmoniously and competently to make it fit into the environment. The monument of Mikhail Lermontov is really interesting. Tourists from all over the world visit every year. The monument became an integral part of our beloved city.
