Author Outline W. D. Wetherell • • Born 1948 in New York First started publishing in the 1980’s Famous fiction writer At the age of 19 he wrote his first short story on a ping pong table in his parents basement. • He was rejected by publishers for 8 years.
Author Outline W. D. Wenterell • He had a passion for fishing, always looking for big fish to catch. • He lived in New Hampshire with his wife and 2 kids. • His whole life revolved around fishing and writing. • He won many awards, including the O. Henry Award for fiction.

Theme • The theme of this story is be yourself. • This is theme because if the narrator had been himself and gone for the bass he wouldn’t have lost both the girl and the fish. Therefore, he would have been successful with the catch of his life.
Theme • Also, if he was being himself, he would have realized that he would have never wanted to go out with a girl who didn’t even like fishing.

Over and over, the author is thinking how beautiful she looks in her white dress
Digging Deeper In our group’s eyes, The significance of this story strongly relates to the narrator’s life. For example, The narrator, W. D. Wetherell, loved fishing and grew up fishing in a river, similar to the one mentioned in the story. Also, the fact that he grew up with no television or computer and experienced nature ultimately effected the way he described nature with such a passion in this story.
