The Accommodations Bibliography http: //www 2. cehd. umn. edu/NCEO/accommodations/ 1
Introduction • The Online Accommodations Bibliography allows users to search a compilation of empirical research studies on the effects of various testing accommodations for students with disabilities. • You can perform a basic search of the bibliography for specific accommodation research studies by typing in keywords related to the accommodation, disability, test content area, or student age. • Brief summaries of each study are provided, and include information on the accommodation, participants, dependent variable, and major findings of the study. • There are nearly 300 documents in the bibliography, including research performed during the current year. 2
Method Step 1 – Identify instances of empirical research of testing accommodations in print or in online dissertation databases: a. Review of three research databases: ERIC, Digital Dissertations, Educational Abstracts b. Web search using Google and Google Scholar c. Search of major research center Web sites d. Hand searches of relevant journals e. Discussion among researches in the field • Search for terms like: Test accommodations, Accommodation and Test, or Assessment, Modification and Test, or Assessment, Read Aloud and Test, or Assessment 3
Method Step 2 – Search the following websites of organizations that frequently publish accommodation studies for new reports, papers, and articles on accommodations: a. Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing (http: //cresst 96. cse. ucla. edu/index 4. htm) b. The College Board Research Library (http: //www. collegeboard. com/research/home) c. Wisconsin Center for Educational Research (http: //www. wcer. wisc. edu) d. Behavioral Research and Teaching (http : //brt. uoregon. edu/) e. Delaware Department of Education - Delaware Student Testing Program Research (http: //www. doe. state. de. us/aab/DSTPresearch. html) f. Vanderbilt (http: //peabody. vanderbilt. edu/sped/research. htm) 4
Method Step 3 – Hand Search Journals: Examples: a. Applied Measurement in Education b. Educational Assessment c. Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice d. Exceptional Children e. Journal of Educational Measurement f. Journal of School Psychology 5
Criteria • To be summarized and included in this online bibliography, studies need to involve either (1) experimental manipulation of an accommodation, (2) investigation of the comparability of test scores across accommodated and non-accommodated conditions, or (3) examination of survey results on teachers’ knowledge and/or perceptions of accommodations. • Emphasis is placed on including studies that examine testing accommodations as opposed to instructional accommodations. • Although not a requirement for inclusion, studies involving accommodations for students with disabilities are the primary focus of the bibliography. Quality Control is of concern to NCEO!!! 6
