The 3 W’s of Web Site Evaluation
…scoop and smush at a level unseen before the advent of the Internet.
Internet Editors • Who can create a website? • Is there an Internet site regulator or law for posting information? • Is there an Internet editor, approving submissions and postings? • “The burden is on YOU – the reader – to establish the validity, authorship, timeliness, and integrity of what you find. ”
Technique • Scan the pages • Ask yourself three questions. . . Who? What? When?
Who? • Who wrote the pages? – Are they an authority, expert or is it a personal page? • Is there author contact information? • What’s the URL address?
What? • What is the purpose of the site? • Does it lack bias? • Does it include research-based information? • Does the site include other links to find out more information? • Is there a bibliography to the site?
When? • When was the site created? • When was it last updated? • Specific topics that have rapid development should have a recent publish date.
You Be the Judge Activity • Investigate sites and determine whether the site is VALID or FRAUD !
