About the Maccabiah Games • The ‘Jewish Olympics’ – takes place every four years in Israel, run by the Maccabi World Union. • 3 rd largest sporting event in the world after the Olympics and World Masters Games. • Over 8, 000 athletes participants in Open, Junior, Masters & Paralympic categories. • 2009: 51 Countries competing in 31 Sports. • 2013: Expecting 60 -70 countries competing in 34 sports; Australian delegation likely to be around 400 -500 people (incl. athetes, management, security, medical etc. )
Cricket @ Maccabiah • Australia has sent teams since 1973 • 3 x Gold, 3 x Silver, 2 x Bronze • Opportunity to play cricket in unique, tough conditions vs. countries like England, Israel, South Africa & India. • Typically held as one-day 50 -over matches in tournament format, ending with a gold medal final. • It’s more than just a cricket/sporting trip – – Pre-camp with entire Australian team – Cultural/tourist activities (e. g. Dead Sea, Masada, Jerusalem…) – Meeting Jewish people and other Jewish cricketers from other countries.
Cricket @ Maccabiah (cont. ) • 2013 Cricket Age Categories: – Open Mens – Junior Boys (15 -18 yrs, DOB between 1 Jan 1995 – 31 Dec 1998) • Both teams have a Team/Section Manager, and the Juniors will also have a Coach.

Accommodation • Pre-camp: – Entire Australian team based together in one accommodation centre in Jerusalem. • During the Games: – All junior teams will stay in one accommodation centre together (i. e. all sports, all countries) – Participants from each of the competing Open cricket countries all stay together in the same accommodation centre.
Costs & Fundraising • Approx. costs are $11, 000 per athlete • In 2009 the cost was $10, 000 (an increase of only 2. 5% p. a. ) • Includes all travel, accommodation, meals, uniforms, training in Israel • By comparison: Australian National Swim team 21 day trip costs $11, 550 excluding bathers and equipment, tours, security, management & infrastructure support.

Costs & Fundraising (cont. ) • The $11 K figure can be reduced significantly through individual/team fundraising: – – Australian Sports Foundation (ASF) tax-deductible donations Advertising in Team Handbook Team Sponsorship (e. g. Financial, clothing/equipment) Fundraising events (e. g. movie nights, raffles, parties etc. ) • Team Fundraising is typically undertaken to cover costs such as a coach, cricket whites/uniforms, and ‘on-the-ground’ expenses during the games such as water, ice etc.
Costs & Fundraising (cont. ) • There may be other small costs, such as those costs incurred for playing strips, training camps/selection trial, or to send selectors interstate etc. • The general idea is that these costs are covered by team fundraising activities. – Any such costs would be borne equally by all squad members (e. g. so that no players are prejudiced based on their location)
How do you get to go? • Submit a nomination form online by June 30 2012: www. maccabi. com. au/maccabiah/cricket • Include the $1, 000 nomination fee (refundable if not selected or if you withdraw prior to selection) • All nominees become part of the ‘squad’ from which the final teams will be selected by a panel. • Final selected teams will consist of 13 players in both Open and Juniors. • Team selections to be finalised by 10 December 2012. • Selection Process: A Selection Charter document has been created on the website. The way selection will be conducted will be finalised by the selection panel/s once nominations have closed.

Expectations of Nominees • Contribute to individual & squad fundraising. • Commit from now - both mentally and physically. • Get involved with and commit to regular training programs (to be determined in conjunction with Coach/Management)
