IMS 2009 Technical Program Goals • Highest quality • Encourage attendees to broaden their focus (& stay longer!) • Spread activities more evenly throughout week –Have RFIC schedule “flow” into IMS schedule –Steady flow of traffic through exhibit area • • More Interaction Make the technical content easier to access Close coordination with RFIC & MTT TC’s Innovate

IMS 2009 collaboration with RFIC & TCs • RFIC & MTT TCs provide technical expertise & year-to-year continuity • IMS Local Committees (e. g. , IMS 2009) provide new perspective & opportunity for change Provides Nice Balance

Microwave Week Schedule • Plenary Session on Monday evening – Successful for RFIC – Opens slots for more technical sessions on Tues • IMS workshops – Back to Monday and Friday only – Add a few Wednesday workshops (RFIC / ARFTG) • Thursday evening social – Add a social highlight for the end of the week – Encourage attendees to stay longer

Interactive Forum • Interactive forum papers don’t overlap (in time) with technical sessions – IF papers are held in rooms adjacent to the technical sessions, between oral sessions – Oral sessions reduced to four 20 -minute papers (80 minutes total)

Collect Feedback from attendees • Collect Session rating forms from audience in all technical sessions –Scan-able paper forms –“Best Paper” of session • Incentivize Workshop & Panel session organizers: –Awards for biggest workshop & best workshop –Award for “most well-attended” panel –Award for “most entertaining” panel • Use ‘clickers’ in Panel Sessions to increase audience participation

Real-Time Audience Polling Using RF Clickers We plan to buy 30 -40 clickers, try this in IMS 2009 panel sessions

Virtual participation • Web cam to broadcast sights and sounds of the symposium • Record short courses and potentially other workshops or technical sessions with Camtasia for later downloads from web

Other New Additions • Print on demand kiosks • Offer Super-pass that allows access to all RFIC/IMS technical sessions and workshops • “Happy Hour”/cocktail reception on exhibit floor • Improved tracking and data logging of attendee patterns

TPC Member Selection Process • Feedback from 2008 TPC subcommittee chairs/ co-chairs used to “retire” some members, along with other retirees (17 total) • Added new members – Reinstated members (4) – Highly-qualified new members (11), recommended by existing TPC members or TCCs • >95% of TPC membership determined by June ‘ 08 • Subcommittee assignments to be made by Sept. ‘ 08 – Balance paper loading – Surveyed all members: 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd choices

Revised TPC scoring • Spread the scores apart to make scoring easier • Increase the range of scores to 0 – 10 • Normalize the mean and standard deviation by reviewer, before combining –TPMS will do the work

New for IMS 09 Workshops • New schedule for workshops: Ø RFIC workshops on Sunday Ø IMS workshops on Monday & Friday Ø Joint RFIC/IMS & ARFTG/IMS workshops on Wednesday • Two-tier workshop review process Ø Traditional workshop proposals due -- 19 Sept 2008 Workshop title, abstract, & list of speakers, plus proposed TC sponsorship Ø Preliminary accept/reject by -- 3 Oct 2008 Ø Deadline for final proposal with speaker abstracts -- 7 Nov 2008 Final workshop proposal is reviewed by Technical Committees TPMS will probably be used for reviews, including scoring criteria Ø Deadline for completed TC reviews to IMS 09 SC -- 12 Dec 2008 Ø Final workshop notification accept/reject -- 22 Dec 2008

New for IMS 09 Workshops • Workshop abstract AND individual speaker abstracts Workshop QA Ø Provide sufficient information for Technical Committee (TC) review Ø Makes multi-TC review more realistic • Workshop reviews done by primary TC sponsor and 2 secondary TCs Ø Workshop proposer selects primary/secondary or primary/co-sponsor TCs Ø Encourage workshops sponsored by multiple TCs (already common) • Short Course reviews done by IMS 09 Short Course/Workshop Team Ø Solicit MTT-S Technical Committees for Short Course Proposals Ø Directly solicit at least 2 good lecturers for Short Courses (goal: 2 -4 short courses)

New for IMS 09 Workshops • Plan to record largest workshops for web-based Virtual Participation • Workshop feedback forms will be used & awards granted Ø Award for “highest quality” workshop Ø Award for “highest attendance” workshop • Final accepted workshop proposal will go on-line Ø Available to attendees prior to registration for workshop • Workshop fees will be waived as incentive to meet deadlines Ø Speakers whose notes are submitted on time Ø Organizers whose workshops meet all deadlines

New for 2009: RFIC/IMS Workshop Coordination Lyons/Kushner agreement with RFIC Exec Comm/TPC • IMS Workshop Chair member of RFIC Workshop Selection Committee Ø IMS Chair ensures RFIC/IMS coordination, merges workshops • RFIC Workshops on Sunday Ø Joint RFIC/IMS Workshops on Wednesday (maybe Wed AM only) • MTT-23 (RFIC TC) leads in organizing RFIC workshops Ø RFIC (not so much IMS) is responsible for good quality RFIC workshops • IMS 2009 handles logistics for RFIC 2009 Ø Ø Prints workshop notes & CDs Produces an all-RFIC CD Room setups Lunches & breaks
