Who do we teach? A wise teacher once said: ‘If I have twenty students in my classroom, I have twenty different levels of instruction. ’
Who do we teach? 5 -7 year olds • Developing motor skills: ü Learn to draw, to trace, to colour and to write; • Learn to read: ü Recognise sounds, spelling, multiple meanings; • Enjoy singing, chanting and moving; • Like games and physical activities; • Have short attention span: -need activities varied often; • Very open and curious; • Learn to work in groups
Who do we teach? 8 -11 year olds • • • Have developed motor skills Have developed reading skills, enjoy reading; Handwriting? Differentiate between fact and fiction; Enjoy singing, chanting, role-plays; Take pleasure in sports, games and physical activities; Like video and computer games; Attention span? Ask less questions. Why?
What students are afraid of? • making grammar mistakes (from over-correction? ) • appearing foolish • sounding strange or foreign • not having enough vocabulary • not knowing what to say
Think of age specific features of students you teach in your class and share this with your partner • Primary; low-secondary; teens; • Name at least 3 key features
Students generally differ in: • • their amount of previous education; their exposure to English outside the classroom; personality factors; styles of learning; level of motivation; age; gender; linguistic ability in mother tongue.

Mixed Ability Teaching Some students are aggressive and don’t give the shy ones time to talk I always bring the weak students to the front of the class because otherwise they hide. 11. 02. 2018 Teachers say… Maybe the problem is with me but I can’t work any harder I only have one coursebook so I have to give everybody the same Some students are advanced and loose interest in the lesson, and some of them hardly know any English at all
“Problems” associated with diversity: • • • Lesson planning; Choosing materials; Involving all the students; Poor motivation of weaker students; Boredom of good students; Teacher self-esteem. 11. 02. 2018
Fast finishers • • • What can I do? Stretch the activity; Let them help slower students; Give them additional activity; Keep early finishers occupied; Helping with learning difficulties.
Stretching enough? We have to stretch students’ activities not to keep them bored at the lesson
