He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt (disrespect): 10 “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortionists, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get. ’ 13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted. ” Luke 18: 9 -14 (ESV) Let the Children Come to Me Vv 15 -17 Now they were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them. And when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called them to him, saying, “Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. 17 Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it. ”

How to Enter the Kingdom of God • In the previous parable vv 9 -14 Jesus had taught that it was necessary to be humble before God; HUMBLE (Tapeinos) to make low, bring low; to level, reduce to a plain; to be ranked below others who are honoured or rewarded. To have a modest opinion of one's self. • In these verses He compared that humility to childlikeness: “Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God” (v 16); • A person must come to Him in humility in order to enter the kingdom of God; 1. Children come with expectation and excitement. 2. They come realizing that they are not sufficient in themselves. 3. Letting Children Free to Develop? Coleridge was once talking with a man who told him that he did not believe in giving little children any religious instruction whatsoever. His theory was that the child’s mind should not be prejudiced in any direction, but when he came to years of discretion he should be permitted to choose his religious opinions for himself. Coleridge said nothing; but after a while he asked his visitor if he would like to see his garden. The man said he would, and Coleridge took him out into the garden, where only weeds were growing. The man looked at Coleridge in surprise, and said, “Why this is not a garden!
