The TWAREN Initiative q A comprehensive, 6 -year national development plan formulated by the government to foster creativity and develop talents q Will cost an estimated US$75 billion starting 2003. q Serves as the infrastructure that enables new possibilities in R&D, global collaboration and learning, discoveries and innovation … q Serves as part of the mechanisms to train manpower, create jobs, spur economic growth and strengthen competitiveness. 3
Future Infrastructure Drives Today’s Research Agenda q The success story of the NSFnet is inspirational q TWAREN will be a new all-optical network with 10 Gigabit Ethernet and DWDM technology at its core q A backbone of 40 -100 Gbps will encircle 1000 km along Taiwan’s coastal areas q Connects universities and colleges as well as research institutions all throughout the island 4
Core Nodes in Science Parks q Four core nodes are strategically located at science parks to serve industrial R&D besides academic research q The NCHC, situated in Hsinchu, where semiconductor and electronic industries dominate the Park, already has a branch office down south. Will set up one more office in central Taiwan. 5

Linking R&E Community to the World q Three domestic networks invest heavily in international connectivity: q. TANet 2 – funded by the National Science Council, a research network ran by the NCHC. q. TANet – funded by the Ministry of Education, serves higher education and K-12 concerns q. ASnet – supported by various sources, services researchers in Academia Sinica and clientele outside the campus q International connectivity will be further expanded in a joint effort 8

General Applications q TWAREN will provide a high bandwidth, highefficiency network to support research and development q At home, it serves as a far-reaching platform for research and learning q Going overseas, we will enhance connectivity to allow collaborative research, in e-Science and e. Learning q Language education is especially emphasized. English is a major focus. 13
