PZAF – Cardiff – 2009 J. Sigl M. A. – Syene – 14/11/2009 Proving animals/animal products as items of trade 1)Manually: “Former trade connections or other contacts among distant areas can be illustrated by means of animal remains belonging to species that did not occur in the vicinity of an archaeological site. Such allochthonous species can be imported at a site as living animals, as curiosities, as status symbols or tributes, as fresh or preserved food items, as raw materials for the production of objects, as finished objects, or as items with a symbolic, religious or pecuniary value. Raw materials, such as antler or ivory, or objects made from skeletal parts, can arrive at a site as a result of complex and indirect trade or exchange processes and the same caveats usually apply to molluscs. ” (Van Neer et al 2004) 2) Chemically: Stable Isotope Analysis
