Centrale vragen in het werk van Sen Wat is daadwerkelijk belangrijk voor mensen om hun welvaart en welzijn af te meten? Stel dat we willen bepalen hoe goed een gemeenschap erin slaagt om een rechtvaardige samenleving te creëren, waar zouden we dat dan af moeten meten?

Sen: capability = individu + context ‘…the freedom of agency that we individually have is inescapably qualified and constrained by the social, political and economic opportunities that are available to us. There is a deep complementarity between individual agency and social arrangements. ’ Sen, Development as freedom, OUP 1999, pp. xi - xii

Capability: focus on value “In contrast to the utility-based or resource-based lines of thinking, individual advantage is judged in the capability approach by a person’s capability to achieve things he or she has reason to value. ” Sen, The Idea of Justice. Allen Lane, 2009, p. 231.

Capability benadering Sen (1980, 1985, 1992, 1999, 2009) Nussbaum (2006, 2011) Drie belangrijke “verschuivingen”: • Hulpbronnen leiden niet automatisch tot capabilities • daadwerkelijke “doings and beings” (functionings) in plaats van geluk of tevredenheid • “vrijheden” in plaats van realisatie / invulling van capabilities

Capabilities professional Ook de professional moet zijn of haar capabilities kunnen realiseren. Moet kunnen zijn wie zij / hij wil zijn en moet dingen kunnen doen die waarde toevoegen voor hem/haarzelf en de omgeving

Zeven werkwaarden • Kennis en vaardigheden gebruiken • Kennis en vaardigheden ontwikkelen • Betrokken zijn bij belangrijke beslissingen • Betekenisvolle werkcontacten met anderen hebben of opbouwen • Eigen doelen stellen • Een goed inkomen verdienen • Een bijdrage leveren aan het creëren van iets waardevols

Van waarde naar capability 1. Hoe belangrijk is deze waarde voor u in uw werk? 2. Biedt uw huidige werk u voldoende mogelijkheden om deze waarde te realiseren? 3. Lukt het u daadwerkelijk om deze waarde te realiseren?

Take home messages • Capabilities kunnen richting geven aan positieve gezondheid en positieve psychologie • Ga op zoek naar wat waardevol is voor de cliënt in zijn of haar context en wat belemmerende of helpende factoren zijn • Bewaak uw eigen capabilities: je moet zelf kunnen zwemmen om geloofwaardig zwemles te kunnen geven
