Surrey Park Swim Club AGE GROUP TO OPEN – A WHOLISTIC APPROACH How do we get there?
3 Important questions for all swimming families: What are your Goals in swimming? What do you have to do to reach your Full potential? As Parents, are you committed to help your child?
12 & Under Swimming! n Skill / Learning development n Teach them correct basic skills – then teach them how to train n Talent Identification n Internally owned competition / club! n n Social interaction n n Friendship, camaraderie and team work Social Justice n n Government report into Junior Sport in the late 90’s Everyone’s equal Process over outcome n Personal Best Vs Gold medal!
n General Changes to Junior / State Development Squads: n n n Increase of training distances from 25 mt to 50 -75 -100 mt Introduction of Drill Progressions – Junior to Open squads! Introduction of “Challenge” Sets: n n 60% of squad members averaging 2 sessions per week n n n 500 Swim Time Trial 200 Kick Time Trial Stretching session once a week on a rotational basis See the Training Continuum 6 sessions per week on offer All Junior swimmers encouraged to attend Surrey Park Long Course swim meet coming up on 1 st Nov! Introduction of “Term Report Cards” Coach meetings / question time: n n Before 4. 20 pm or via email for an appointment Try to refrain from talking to coaches while the session is being conducted
Age Group Swimmers – 12 -16 years! n We want our swimmers to keep coming back after being in the program for more than a decade - How? Ø It’s Fun, Fun - Enjoyable! Ø No pressure to compete externally when they are young Ø Promote friendship / camaraderie Ø It’s not just about swimming Ø Great facilities
Age Group to Open! o Identify and educate swimmers Ø Engineer your group dynamics Ø Ø Develop Team Culture with your swimmers – Use a Sport Psych Get your swimmers to learn about “Buy In”
Age Group Swimmers - 12 -16 years o Retention comes from constant challenge to the swimmers Ø Minimum o / maximum theory High emphasis on Cross-training to make training enjoyable! Ø Boxing-Bike-Skip Ø Core strength program Ø Circuit Ø Running / Mud Runs Ø Games – Dodge Ball Ø Relays etc… Ø Overnight camps Ø Swim-A-Thon
Age Group to Open Continuum! n Session and commitment progression – Ø Ø Ø Ø 10 and under 11 years 12 years 13 years 14 years 15 years 16 and over – 3 to 4 sessions per week – 5 to 6 sessions per week – 6 to 7 sessions per week – 7 to 8 sessions per week – 8 to 9 sessions per week – 9 sessions per week Stretching Core Strength 1 gym 1 Box/Skip / 1 run 2 gym 1 Box/Bike/Skip 2 gym 2 Box/Bike/Skip 2 -3 gym 2 Box/Bike/Skip
