Surrey Archaeological Society Web Site Introduction Aim: After attending this session you should be able to confidently add/edit page/story/event content on the Society’s web site to a basic level.
Basics • • Live web site at : http: //www. surreyarchaeology. org. uk Login at : http: //www. surreyarchaeology. org. uk/login Site hosted at Fonant Site technology is Drupal (like Wikipedia) Some bugs – better in Firefox than Internet Explorer You are, or will be, set up as users, with passwords Users have roles: – – – Admin-common : everyone Groupname admin : everyone Event admin : everyone Committee member : Not used Site admin : myself/David Graham : set up users and everything …. Anonymous users : everyone else – view only • Legal stuff – Society is liable and you publish direct – Copyright (text and pictures) – Defamation
Content Management : Types • Pages : static information, text e. g. Holmbury Hill fieldwork report • Stories : articles which are part of single pages e. g. Roman Studies news • Events : calendar entry – date, time with tags • Tagging: (tags are also hyperlinks) – – Allow similar content to be grouped automatically Periods e. g. Roman Groups e. g. Prehistoric Group Events e. g. Lecture
Create/edit an event • Click on menu : Create content – event • Enter dates/title/categories/body/location/attach file/url • Preview and then publish if happy

Create/edit a page/story • • Click on menu : Create content – page Enter title/categories/body/location/files/images Preview and then publish if happy Important tip : create text of content in Word or text editor as it cannot be saved in the creation process and can be proofed more easily

Finally please remember: • • Prepare your content first and save it separately Try to do something next week and keep practising Keep it simple Stick to Arial 13 and black on white for consistency The more you do the better – site gets richer and therefore more hits Don’t hesitate to call or email me for advice I will try to supervise but this could get time-consuming Events and official information is fine but lets have some archaeology!
