Summary of the main findings 4 th project meeting, Malta Presenters: • Júlia Balogh • Dóra Juhász • Zsolt Kovács Batthyány Lajos Grammar School and Secondary Medical School
What was it all about? Students from several countries had been measuring their energy consumption for more than a whole year. They shared the collected data with each other at consecutive meetings. In this presentation we summarize our findings and thoughts.
Sources of energy in Hungary
Energy audit process Analyze Data Information Energy audit Measure Take action
Average day energy consumption
Comparing three stundents’ homes
Suggestions v v v Turn down the temperature of your water heater to the warm setting (48, 8 C%). Check if your water heater has an insulating blanket. Start using energy-saving settings on refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines, and clothes dryers. Survey your incandescent lights for opportunities to replace them with compact fluorescents. Turn down thermostat, or up in summer. Clean or replace furnace, air-conditioner, and heat-pump filters.
Keep in mind… Improving a homes air tightness (that is, to cut air leakage) can reduce consumption by 15 -40% … proper insulation is a must! Programmable thermostat is a must Microwave oven’s use up to 75% less Laptop computers use 90% less Switch off the gadgets you don’t use!
DEFINITION OF CARBON FOOTPRINT A carbon footprint is a measure of the impact our activities have on the environment, and in particular climate change. It relates to the amount of greenhouse gases produced in our day-to-day lives through burning fossil fuels for electricity, heating and transportation etc. The carbon footprint is a measurement of all greenhouse gases we individually produce and has units of tonnes (or kg) of carbon dioxide equivalent.
Calculations of our carbon footprint House 3. 26 tonna CO 2 Flights 0. 30 tonna CO 2 Car 6. 35 tonna CO 2 Motorbike 0. 00 tonna CO 2 Bus and train 0. 79 tonna CO 2 Secondary 4. 48 tonna CO 2 Total = 15. 18 tonna CO 2
For individuals Turn off your lights, TV, DVD player, mobile phone, computer, when you don’t use them. Turn down the central heating slightly Fill your dishwasher and washing machine with a full load. Do your daily shopping, when you go home after work Slow down your driving Use laptop
• Don’t buy fresh fruit and vegetables which are out of season, they may have been imported to your country from long distances • Try to only buy products made close to your home • Buy organic produce • Don’t buy packaged products • Recycle as much as possible
