L’imparfait

To form: Take the ‘nous’ form nous prenons Remove the ending Pren. And add the appropriate imperfect ending -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient E. g. Je prenais Tu prenais Il/elle/on prenait Nous prenions Vous preniez Ils/Elles prenaient I used to take/I took/I was taking

Être is the only exception on making the imperfect tense, all of the other verbs follow the same pattern. Être – to be J’étais Tu étais Il/elle/on était Nous étions Vous étiez Ils/elles étaient

Verbs ending in –ger keep the ‘e’, except before an ‘i’. E. g. Je mangeais Tu mangeais Il mangeait Nous mangions Vous mangiez Ils mangeaient

Il y avait – there was / there were / there used to be

Uses of the imperfect tense Description – Cendrillon était jeune et belle. Repeated actions – Chaque jour Cendrillon devait se lever avec l’aube. Setting the scene – C’était la nuit du bal. Was …. . Ing/Were … ing – Cendrillon rangait la cuisine lentement.

Si + imperfect If only … E. g. Si mon père retrouvait du boulot – If only my father found a job

Le plus-que-parfait

The pluperfect tense if formed from the imperfect of avoir/être and the past participle. It translates had in English – elle avait mangé – she had eaten. Avoir à l’imparfait J’avais Tu avais Il/elle/on avait Nous avions Vous aviez Ils/elles avaient Être à l’imparfait J’étais Tu étais Il/Elle/On était Nous étions Vous étiez Ils/elles étaient

It is used to show that something happened in the past before another thing had happened. E. g. Il a quitté les Shires parce que son oncle lui avait donné l’anneau. Verbs that take être as normal: Elle était allée – she had gone Ils s’étaient trompés – they had made a mistake

Le futur proche

Immediate Future Tense Use ‘aller’ plus the infinitive. E. g. I am going to speak. Je vais parler – I am going to speak. Il va se coucher – he is going to go to bed. Nous n’allons pas manger du chocolat – we aren’t going to eat any chocolate. Ils ne vont jamais oublier leurs devoirs – they are never going to forget their homework.

Le ‘vrai’ futur

(Proper) Future Tense -IR / -ER regular verbs. Take the infinitive and add these endings: Je parlerai Tu finiras Il / elle / one jouera Nous réussirons Vous pleurerez Ils / elles travailleront

However with regular –RE verbs you add the above ending on to the end of the infinitive, but you must remember to remove the –e first. E. g. vendre je vendrai

The following verbs have irregular stems – but the endings remain the same. être – je serai venir – je viendrai avoir – j’aurai tenir – je tiendrai faire – je ferai recevoir – je recevrai aller – j’irai s’asseoir m’assiérai devoir – je devrai (ac)cueillir cueillerai vouloir – je voudrai pouvoir – je pourrai savoir – je saurai envoyer – j’enverrai voir – je verrai courir – je courrai – je acquérir – j’acquerrai falloir – il faudra mourir – je mourrai pleuvoir – il pleuvra

N. B. used after the following phrases: Quand – when Lorsque – when Dès que – as soon as Aussitôt que – as soon as Lorsqu’il viendra, je lui parlerai – when he comes I will speak to him. Le futur – the future (only the tense) Futur(e) – can be used as an adjective E. g. mon futur mari L’avenir (m) – the future (a noun)

Le conditionnel

To form: take the FUTURE stem and add the IMPERFECT endings: Je donnerais Tu vendrais Il finirait On mettrait Nous prendrions Vous boiriez Ils écriraient Elles liraient

Irregulars: avoir – j’aurais être – je serais aller – j’irais faire – je ferias voir – je verrais vouloir – je voudrais acquérir – j’acquerrais accueillir – je cueillerais asseoir – je m’assiérais mourir – je mourrais recevoir – je recevrais envoyer – j’enverrais courir – je courrais savoir – je saurais venir – je viendrais tenir – je tiendrais pleuvoir – il pleuvrair falloir – il faudrait valoir – il vaudrait pouvoir – je pourrais devoir – je devrais

Uses: To translate ‘would’ E. g. Il serait – he would be Je fumerais – I would smoke Il y aurait – there would be NB. Je pourrais – I would be able to or I could Je devrais – I would have to or I should Politeness Pourriez-vous m’envoyer. . . ? – Could you send me. . . ? Je voudrais. . . – I would like. . .

Brownie points at A level: Use si + imperfect + conditional E. g. Si je la j’achèterais une maison gagnais lotterie imperfect results in conditional If I own the lottery I would buy a house. E. g. Je sortirais ce soir si j’avais l’argent I would go out if I had the money
