Jesus Foretells His “DEATH” – but the Disciples DO NOT Get It!

Mark 8: 29 -33 – Jesus’ First Foretelling of His Death [29] And He continued by questioning them, “But Who DO YOU SAY that I AM? ” Peter answered and said to Him, “Thou art the CHRIST. ” [30] And HE WARNED them to tell no one about Him.

[31] And He BEGAN TO TEACH them that the Son of Man… … MUST SUFFER many things… … and BE REJECTED by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, … … and BE KILLED, … … and after three days RISE AGAIN.

[32] And He was STATING the MATTER PLAINLY. And Peter took Him aside and BEGAN to REBUKE Him.

[33] But turning around and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter, and said, “GET BEHIND ME, SATAN; for YOU ARE NOT SETTING YOUR MIND ON GOD’S INTERESTS, BUT MAN’S. ”

Mark 9: 30 -32 – Jesus’ Second Foretelling of His Death (Following Jesus’ transfiguration and casting out of a demon…) [30] And from there they went out and began to go through Galilee, and He was unwilling for anyone to know (about it).

[31] For He was TEACHING His disciples and TELLING them, “The Son of Man… … is to BE DELIVERED into the hands of men, … … and they WILL KILL HIM; and when He has been killed, … … He WILL RISE three days later. ”

[32] BUT THEY DID NOT UNDERSTAND (this) statement, and THEY WERE AFRAID TO ASK Him.

Why the Disciples DID NOT UNDERSTAND the CROSS

[35] And sitting down, He called the twelve and said to them, “WHOEVER WANTS to be FIRST, (they shall be) LAST OF ALL, and SERVANT (DEE-AK’-ON-OS Noun 1249) OF ALL. ” [36] And TAKING A CHILD, He set him before them, and taking him in His arms, He said to them,

[37] “WHOEVER RECEIVES one CHILD LIKE THIS in My name RECEIVES ME; and WHOEVER RECIEVES ME does not receive Me, BUT HIM WHO SENT ME. ”

[43] “And if your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life crippled, than having your two hands, to go into hell, into the unquenchable fire, [44] [where THEIR WORM DOES NOT DIE, AND THE FIRE IS NOT QUENCHED. ]”

[45] “And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame, than having your two feet, to be cast into hell, [46] [where THEIR WORM DOES NOT DIE, AND THE FIRE IS NOT QUENCHED. ]”

[47] “And if your eye causes you to stumble, cast it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes, to be cast into hell, [48] where THEIR WORM DOES NOT DIE, AND THE FIRE IS NOT QUENCHED. ” [Is 66: 24] [49] “For everyone will be salted with fire.

[50] Salt is good; but if the salt becomes UNSALTY, with what will you make it salty (again)? HAVE SALT IN YOURSELVES, and be at peace with one another. ”

[19] “You know the commandments, ‘DO NOT MURDER, DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, DO NOT STEAL, DO NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS, DO NOT DEFRAUD, HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER. ’” [20] And he said to Him, “Teacher, I have KEPT ALL THESE THINGS from my youth up. ”

[21] And looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him, and said to him, “ONE THING YOU LACK: GO and SELL ALL YOU POSSESS, and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven; and COME, FOLLOW ME. ”

[22] BUT AT THESE WORDS HIS FACE FELL, and he WENT AWAY GRIEVED, for he was one who owned much property. [23] And Jesus, looking around, said to His disciples, “How HARD it will be for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!”

[24] And the disciples were amazed at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, “Children, HOW HARD IT IS TO ENTER THE KINGDOM of God!” [25] “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. ”

[26] And they were even more astonished and said to Him, “THEN WHO CAN BE SAVED? ” [27] Looking upon them, Jesus said, “WITH MEN it is IMPOSSIBLE, BUT NOT WITH GOD; FOR ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE WITH GOD. ”

[28] Peter began to say to Him, “BEHOLD, WE HAVE LEFT EVERYTHING and FOLLOWED YOU. ” [29] Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, FOR MY SAKE and FOR the GOSPEL’S SAKE,

[30] “BUT that they SHALL RECEIVE ONE HUNDRED TIMES AS MUCH now in the present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, ALONG WITH PERSECUTIONS; and IN THE AGE TO COME, ETERNAL LIFE.

[31] “BUT MANY who are FIRST, WILL BE LAST; and the LAST, FIRST. ”

[35] “FOR WHOEVER WISHES TO SAVE THEIR LIFE SHALL LOSE IT; BUT WHOEVER LOSES THEIR LIFE FOR MY SAKE and THE GOSPEL’S SHALL SAVE IT. [36] FOR what does IT PROFIT a man to GAIN the whole world, and FORFEIT his SOUL? ”

[37] “FOR what shall a anyone GIVE in EXCHANGE for their SOUL? [38] FOR whoever IS ASHAMED of ME and MY WORDS in this ADULTEROUS and SINFUL generation, the SON OF MAN will also be ASHAMED of them WHEN HE COMES in the GLORY of His Father with the holy angels. ”

Discipleship Lesson #7 DISCIPLES MUST UNDERSTAND the ATTITUDE that LIES BEHIND the CROSS. JESUS the MESSIAH came… … to SERVE – NOT to be SERVED!

Discipleship Lesson #8 JESUS the MESSIAH came… … NOT to CLAIM everything as RIGHTFULLY His – BUT to RENOUNCE everything!. . . NOT to be ACCLAIMED – BUT to be REJECTED and DESPISED by men!
