Staff at Bands 1 -4 • 13 centres had at least one • 0 at Band 1 • 2 at Band 2 – Admin support for planning, contouring, • 8 at Band 3 (6. 2 WTE) – Admin support for planning, mould room assistance, brachytherapy – Trainee technologists • 10 at Band 4 – Contouring, planning, CT input, dosimetry, QC, mould room assistance, workshop and estates, Linac run-up, admin – Trainee technologists
Of these 13 departments with Staff at Bands 1 - 4 • 2 responded they had plans to expand this part of the workforce • 7 had no plans to do so • 2 responded ‘possibly’ – In one case – depending on how the ‘first one goes’ • 1 responded ‘unknown’ • 1 didn’t respond • 2 had plans to create more posts
HCS Staff at Bands 1 -4 • What qualifications did applicants have: – School, college, BSc, MSc (incl Med Phys), Ph. D • What qualifications did appointee have: – MSc, BSc (non-Physics & Physics-non. UK), ‘no formal qualifications • Mixture of posts created by business case/ ‘skill mix’/ inability to recruit to other posts/ economic pressure/ SHA fixed term funded trainees
For the 13 departments with no HCS staff at Bands 1 -4. • 3 did not consider such a staff group might be useful • 6 did, but only 2 had plans to create such • 2 thought these roles might be of use • 1 was unsure • 1 gave no response • Only 2 with plans to create posts
Training routes/ courses • Whether you have B 1 -4 staff or are planning to, have you investigated any type of training route/ package? • Mixture of responses, eight in total – Radiography course modules, De. Montford Clin Tech BSc, apprenticeship, West Suffolk college “Access to Health and Social care”, Technologist training BSc and MSC training scheme, Sheff-Hallam planning MSc, Tech degree – One responded “nothing relevant” – Two responded “all training given in house”
Summary • From the survey 20 posts exist round the UK in 13 departments • Only 4 had plans to create further posts • Mix of admin and planning/QC support – Many were fixed term funding ‘trainee posts’ • 26 respondees
Discussion • Several ad-hoc comments made about concern of retention in these posts “they all migrate upwards once competent” – Is this a stable workforce – Will be continually training them…. . • Comment from colleagues at SHA mtg – They can retain B 1 to 4 staff – Ensure they make the posts and work interesting and valid in their own right
Discussion • Training • Does use of the Dosimetrist/ Technologists etc type training courses introduce the likelihood of a self fulfilling prophecy? – i. e. difficult to retain because we train them to be wanna-betechnologists • We need to look towards modern apprenticeships – As Engineering departments have – Tailor the training in-house within a structured framework
Discussion • Is there really a role for a HCS Assistant or Associate? – Are they really A&C staff providing admin support to planning – Or, people wanting to gain experience prior to training post applications? • Depends how WE approach this – Remember Dosimetry has become a successful/ robust and VALUABLE profession in its own right – Potentially the ‘Science helper’ could evolve similarly • Remember we are all tasked with saving money without loss of quality!
