Do I Need Medical or Industrial Gloves? Spina Dental is asked this question all the time. Or more importantly, what is the difference to the average glove user. This is the basic “rule of thumb”. If you are using the gloves to protect yourself from blood-borne pathogens, you must use medical gloves. Medical gloves have been certified by the FDA & issued a 510 (k) certificate. Great, what is a blood-borne pathogen? Here is the official definition, “Infectious organisms in the blood, of which the predominent medical interest is their contamination of gloves, etc. , all of which health workers are exposed to. Differentiated from organisms present in the blood as a result of natural infectious process”. So if your using the glove in a human to human, human to animal contact, Use a medical grade glove. What is the difference between medial and industrial gloves? It is the 510 (k) certificate issued by the FDA. The 510 (k) certificate states, “Section 510(k) of the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act requires that device manufacturers must register to notify the FDA, at least 90 days in advance, of their intent to market a medical device. This is known as Premarket Notification, which allows the FDA to determine whether the device is equivalent to a device already placed into one of the three classification categories (Class I, III). Devices are awarded specific numbers for each product. Profound product modifications may require a new 510(k) number. Medical and industrial gloves are made on the same product line, at the same time. The company pays the FDA to certify the portion of the production run which it would like to sell as medical. So, to you and I, the difference is only the FDA certification.
