• Estimated 50, 000 people were murdered, executed or assassinated on both sides • General Francisco Franco became leader of the Nationalists • Germany and Italy sent troops, tanks and planes • Soviet Union contributed equipment and supplies
The Bombing of Guernica • Town was attacked on the day of the weekly fair • 3 hours and over 25 bombers: dropped 100, 000 pounds of bombs • Those who tried to escape were shot by machine guns • Fires burned for 3 days • 75% of the city was destroyed • 1/3 of the population was killed or wounded
• Nationalists and Germans denied they participated in it • Claim the target was somewhere nearby • Guernica represented independence and democratic ideas • Nationalist won the victory – Franco was anti-Communist – Opposition was dealt with, secret police forces, no fair elections
