Southern Federal University (SFEDU) is a modern research university with emphasis on innovations and entrepreneurship. In its academic activities it combines studies with fundamental and applied science, as well as cutting-edge technologies and innovative approaches.

SFEDU is proud of its numerous research institutes dating back to the Soviet era, but equipped with cutting-edge facilities. Award-winning researchers holding over 150 international patents work and teach at SFEDU.

University library is in fact a system of libraries that are a valuable source of information for SFEDU students, faculty and researchers. The library contains a vast collection of books, reference books, dictionaries, manuscripts, legal documents, research papers and periodicals covering a variety of areas, such as historical and social sciences, technical sciences, natural sciences, etc. The total number of items amounts to almost 4 million. SFEDU library may be of special interest to those who study the history of the Don area of Russia and the Don Cossacks, as it contains a number of important historical documents. Although the majority of items are in the Russian language, about 200,000 items represent the languages other than Russian, such as English, German and Arabic.

Southern Federal University takes pride in the sporting achievements of its students and graduates. It is among the university’s priorities to develop student sport and to encourage healthy and dynamic lifestyle. SFEDU students are welcome to join a broad range of sport clubs. Members of SFEDU sports clubs regularly take part in local and national competitions, which helps them to develop team spirit and a passion for leadership. SFEDU students are welcome to join SFEDU Student Club that deals with cultural and entertainment activities and events. SFEDU Student Club aims at providing students with an opportunity to express themselves, to demonstrate their creative skills and talents. The Club supports and runs 4 singing bands, 8 dance companies, and 3 theatrical companies, as well as organizes a variety of concerts, festivals and competitions.

At Southern Federal University, it is currently one of the priorities to promote student self-government. SFEDU administration holds the view that student self-government makes it easier to solve certain university problems, as well as helps students to become more responsible, sensible, independent-minded and socially aware. Student self-government is effected through SFEDU Students’ Union. It is made up of members of smaller students’ unions, such as the faculties’, institutes’ and campuses’ unions. SFEDU Students’ Union is capable of affecting the university’s policy due to its representation in the Academic Council. It is the Union’s current aim to increase such representation.

The offices of SFEDU administration are located at the main SFEDU building in central Rostov. SFEDU International Relations Office is located in the main SFEDU building in Bolshaya Sadovaya Street.
